Black screen with mouse pointer after login after screen lock, again

This issue was reported in another topic:

Black screen with mouse pointer after login after screen lock

It is now closed, that is way I am opening this one.

There, I informed that solved the issue by re-installing Manjaro.
I installed the latest version available 23.0.4 with xfce, but as soon as updated to 23.1.0 the issue re-appeared.

To confirm that, I installed version 23.0.4 in another disk, check everything worked fine, then upgraded to 23.1.0 and boom the issue was there again.

Any help would be highly appreciated, thanks

Hi @javi12,

I won’t be able to help, aside from making sure you have no unmerged .pacnew files?

Check with:

sudo pacdiff -o

It should return blank.

More:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman/Pacnew_and_Pacsave#.pacnew

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply @Mirdarthos
No, there are no .pacnew files.

Then I’m going to suggest all I know further. Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn’t :man_shrugging:

Check if there are any error or warning log entries:

journalctl --priority=warning..err --boot=-1 --no-pager

Where:

  • The --priority=warning..err argument limits the output to warnings and errors only;
  • the --boot=-1 argument limits the output to log messages from the previous boot. This can be adjusted to -2 for the boot before that, -3 to the boot before that, and so on and so forth.
    • --no-pager formats the output nicely for use here, on the forum.

I now went thorough that journalctl output you gave…and, well, nothing jumps out at me. So I don’t know. But someone more knowledgeable that me might know… Sorry!

:sob:

Thank you very much @Mirdarthos in any case, it give me hope to continue looking for a solution :smiley:

you connect with TTY ( Ctrl + Alt + F2 to F7 )
and you restart lightdm.service

sudo systemctl restart lightdm.service

and wait next update version nvidia

I have the idea to downgrade the nvidia driver 545.29.06 to a previous one.

I found your instructions for that in this post

But, I do not know how to find the nvidia driver version used in manjaro 23.0.4

mhwd -l -d --pci

gives:

video-nvidia
video-nvidia-470xx
video-linux
video-modesetting
video-vesa

video-nvidia looks like a pointer to the most current.
video-nvidia-470xx looks old for my card.

A list of installed nvidia related packages…

pamac list -i | grep -i nvidia
lib32-nvidia-utils                545.29.06-1                multilib  208,4 MB
linux61-nvidia                    545.29.06-8                extra     54,8 MB
linux65-nvidia                    545.29.06-10               extra     59,2 MB
mhwd-nvidia                       545.29.06-1                extra     1,7 kB
mhwd-nvidia-390xx                 390.157-9                  extra     1,9 kB
mhwd-nvidia-470xx                 470.223.02-1               extra     1,8 kB
nvidia-settings                   545.29.06-1                extra     1,6 MB
nvidia-utils                      545.29.06-1                extra     670,8 MB

Is it possible to install a version like 535 ? thanks!

My advice, stay away from even trying.
But you do you.

What does pacman -Qs xdg-desktop return?

thanks @bedna

here the output

$ pacman -Qs xdg-desktop
local/xdg-desktop-portal 1.18.2-1
    Desktop integration portals for sandboxed apps
local/xdg-desktop-portal-gtk 1.15.1-1
    A backend implementation for xdg-desktop-portal using GTK

I’ll follow your advice not to try to downgrade nvidia driver.

That’s probably right. So, in theory you could try:

sudo downgrade video-nvidia

But I think that needs manjaro-downgrade from the extra repository:

pamac install manjaro-downgrade

I have never done this, nor have I ever used the downgrade utility, so I’m not talking from experience.

I don’t use Xfce so I thought there could be more xdg-desktop stuff.
But something is going wrong when the login manager (lightdm) is trying to load.

Sorry that I can not be more helpful about that.

As for the nvidia stuff. The kernel taint thing could be because you just put the early loading in, I have seen nvidia complain for the first boot. I think you can safely ignore it.
Just make sure you have secure boot turned off.

Check your grub line.
Make sure you load the nvidia modules early in mkinitcpio.conf.

This brings to the login screen again. After login, get a working desktop environment, but the applications (windows) are gone.

I mean before locking the screen I left some apps open, and after locking, login, black screen, ctrl-f3, login, sudo systemctl restart lightdm.service, there are no apps’ windows open.

AHA!

That’s good news. It gives us another place to look. Please provide the output of:

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=warning..err --unit=lightdm.service --no-pager

Where:

  • The --priority=warning..err argument limits the output to warnings and errors only;
  • --no-pager formats the output nicely for use here, on the forum;
  • the --boot=0 argument limits the messages to be from the current boot. This can be adjusted to -1 for the previous boot, -2 to the boot before that, and so on and so forth;
  • the --unit=lightdm.service argument narrows in to why the login screen unit only, allowing for more details.

here the output…

$ journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=warning..err --unit=lightdm.service --no-pager
Dez 17 13:46:56 pegasus lightdm[1434]: gkr-pam: unable to locate daemon control file
Dez 17 13:48:02 pegasus lightdm[2163]: gkr-pam: unable to locate daemon control file

All I can find is:

My question, now, is what is causing it to die. Let’s look a bit more at the logs, but this time don’t limit it to warnings and errors:

journalctl --boot=-1 --unit=lightdm.service --no-pager

Also, please provide the output of the following from a re-logged in blank session, as described above:

ps aux | grep --ignore-case light

Here the journal…

A search on this lead me to this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=261156

Seems it might have to do with PAM.
Out of curiosity, if you do a lock > unlock > no windows and checks the sessions, would the old still exist?
loginctl list-sessions
