Black screen after installing nvidia drivers

I get a stuttering black screen when trying to boot that does not let me prompt grub but every other 2nd attempt I’m able to see the msi logo and can access grub.

So far I have tried a few things I saw in other topics like disabling nouveau and booting. With this the boot process gets stuck at Started accounts service or Wpa supplicant.

I have a MSI GE62 6QF Apache Pro
NVIDIA GTX970M
Kernel 5.9

I wish I could offer you an inxi as suggested in the forum but I don’t know how to do it since I can’t access tty.

The OS was working fine before I attempted to install nvidia 390xx bumblebee.
I also deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-mhwd.conf before installation, in case it helps in any way.

I hope you can help me. Thank you!

EDIT= things done so far

Hi @manjar000, and welcome!

Sounds like problematic graphics drivers to me.

Are you able to boot into a Live ISO environment? If so, you can chroot with manjaro-chroot into the system and go from there. I’ll help where I can if possible.

Hi, and thank you for your help.

I should be able to, yes. I’m thinking if there’s another way though

I don’t know much about this chroot process. Would it delete some of my data or apps and packages?

No, it wouldn’t. Not on it’s own.

But you are root so you have to be careful to not inadvertently delete something.

I see. Well, I will start by downloading a live ISO to an USB in case that’s my only option left

Cool, do that. If nothing else, with that you can at least get a GUI, web browser and possibly more on your computer.

I have a very similar setup to yours the msi gs72 6qe stealth pro with the same graphics card. Any reason you are trying to use bumblebee? Your card is compatible with the latest Nvidia driver in the repos. I’d try and install the latest Nvidia prime driver via live usb/chroot

Hi @sawdoctor , it was the recommended driver in Manjaro, and for some reason I have had problems installing other drivers than that before.

When installing Manjaro in my laptop I maintained the Windows OS in case I’d need it later, but I haven’t used it at all. Ultimately I’d like to keep Manjaro as my only OS without losing the packages that I have recompiled if that’s possible.

I don’t know if the fact that I have two OS is giving me issues with nvidia.

Dual booting windows won’t affect nvidia drivers. I’ve seen @pobrn help I few people with the same issue, reinstalling manjaro db usually fixes it.

sudo mhwd-db

I think is the correct procedure but hopefully someone more experienced will confirm it

I was able to boot from Live ISO but I don’t know how to continue. I don’t know how to install mhwd-chroot.

If you can boot from the live ISO, that’s half the battle won already. Here are the steps to reinstall mhwd-db:

  1. Boot from the live ISO USB flash drive.
  2. When successfully booted, open a Terminal.
  3. In the terminal enter manjaro-chroot -a to enter the chroot environment. Don’t be scared, just be careful that you don’t inadvertently delete something, as you’re now root.
Once successfully in thee chroot environment, run the follwing to reset mhwd-db:
sudo pacman -S mhwd-db

Hope this helps.

Thank you @Mirdarthos.

I did as instructed.
1 package found mhwd-db-0.6.5-7
Reinstalled successfully.

What’s next?

Reboot and test. If it still doesn’t work, repeat the steps for obtaining the chroot environment. But instead of reinstalling mhwd-db, reinstall your graphics drivers.

I do not know if your graphics card is supported by the nvidia 460xx drivers or not, so I’m just going to give the commands for both.

First find out whether you have any drivers already installed:

$ sudo mhwd -li

Mine, as example:

$ sudo mhwd -li
[sudo] password for mirdarthos:
> Installed PCI configs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
video-nvidia 2020.11.30 false PCI

Warning: No installed USB configs!

In the output you can see which drivers are installed, if any. If there are you need to uninstall each of them. So run the following command, once for each line. (Every driver is on each own line.)

sudo mhwd -r <driver>

Where <driver> is the name of the driver reported. So in this case the command would be:

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia

DO NOT REBOOT

Now you need to reinstall the drivers. To do so, run:

sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

To install the proprietary drivers. I’ve never done this, but I’m guessing to install the free drivers would be:

sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

If all went well you can exit out of the chroot environment:

exit

and close the terminal. If it didn’t, well, then I’m non-existent.

Hold your thumbs, cross your heart, say a little prayer, and reboot. Theoretically, it should be back now.

Thank you @Mirdarthos

It removes the drivers successfully.

Installing the drivers gives me “error failed retrieving the files” … “could not resolve the host”

*sorry for the screenshots, later I noticed the rules about those.

That is looks like a DNS resolving issue which means there is nothing I can do 'bout it. The problem, I think, is either you ISP’s DNS server, or you router’s. And with none of those I am able to help.

Open a new, separate terminal and let’s see if you can at least reach outside.

ping 8.8.8.8

If this works, do the following to see if DNS resolution works:

ping google.com

If the first one fails, then it is possible there is a problem with your internet connection. Try restarting the connection.

If it works and the second one fails, then there is a problem with your DNS resolution and I’m afraid I won’t be able to help.

I am able to receive traffic from both commands. And I can browse the internet.

I tried installing the drivers after resetting wifi but it still doesn’t work.

I found a post recommending updating the database, so I exited chroot and ran sudo pacman -Syu elinks and I was able to install the drivers.

Now time for rebooting :crossed_fingers:t2:

Then I have absolutely no idea what’s going on there, sorry. Maybe just keep on trying, and wait to see if it comes right, or if someone that knows more than me can help.

P.S.: Try setting it to a different mirror. Using the pacman-mirrors dcommand:

sudo pacman-mirrors --geoip

I am glad it works now. reboot and hope is next, yes.

We are getting some progress here. It does not boot to login but I can access tty from a black screen though

I added some new information to my post, hopefully someone can help.

Just saw that, thanks!

The inxi from the chroot shows you still have, and use the 5.9 Kernel version. And AFAIK that’s EOL (End Of Life) so shouldn’t really be used anymore.

I do not know if this will work and if it doesn’t, well I’m not sure there’s anything I could do, then

  1. Boot from the Live ISO.
  2. When done, open a terminal and enter a chroot environment.
manjaro-chroot -a
  1. As you know by now, you’re root so be careful.
Now you’ve got to remove your old kernel:
mhwd-kernel -r linux59
  1. Now, while you’re at it, remove any graphics drivers.
sudo mhwd -r video-nvidia

And/or

sudo mhwd -r video-linux

When done, install the new, proprietary nvidia drivers:

sudo mhwd -i video-nvidia

Or if your card’s not supported by the proprietary or you just prefer it, the open-source, nouveau drivers:

sudo mhwd -i video-linux

It’s very important to read the output so that you know if there was an error or if everything is successful.

If this doesn’t work, then it’s way, way, WAY above my :exploding_head: and we’ll have to have someone who DOES know help you.
