At random times Plasma session restarts

Hello,

I am a relatively new linux user and I am getting a very weird behavior on my manjaro with the KDE plasma.
I will try to keep a long story short. I have been using manjaro for two years now and everything was wonderful. In the past two months I have been reinstalling manjaro due to an SSD issue. Nevertheless with the new installation I get a very weird behavior and I suspect that it originates from sddm. A thing to keep in mind is that my screen locks after 5 mins.
Some times after the screen is locked I try to login. When I log-in the KDE session starts fresh from the beginning !

This is very annoying and I have lost a lot of work this way. Many times I left my PC to go make a coffee only to be greeted with a fresh session.
It looks like oom event but I dont see anything in the logs.

Did you check this 2 issues under Known Issues?

You can also complettly skip SDDM when you want to restart/shutdown… this evades problems too.

System Settings>session>log out screen: shown, mark it unselected.

Additional i can recommend to remove splash screen also:
System Settings>Colors & Themes>Splash Screen>None

Most Important for you, right now since you face this issues:
System Settings>Screen Locking:

Lock Screen Automatically: Never (You may just want to adjust this Value, if the Lock Screen is important to you, but disable the Lock after sleep should solve the most pain, that you face right now)
Lock after waking from sleep: unchecked.

Less features, less bugs = more stability.

That said, if the first 2 work around’s cure your problems, you may don’t need to disable this SDDM Features.

Thank you for your reply. Actually I had this problem but I resolve exactly by following these posts, however my issue now is a bit different. I can shutdown/restart normally this is not the issue anymore.
My issue is that sometimes after my screen locks and I try to log-in I am greeted with a new session.
For example my screen will lock (after 5min) and usually I would login just normally and I would continue from where I left off but sometimes it would be a complete new session (because the previous one just crashed). I think its because the sddm throws a seg fault.
Nevertheless, I have done exactly the steps that you mentioned and I have disabled the sddm and it seems that the issue is fixed (3 days in a row and I hadn’t any sessions crashes) but I would like to fix it. (I have been troubleshooting this for a while and I would like to learn how to better troubleshoot linux in general, so it also a bit of a challenge).

This I haven’t seen this but again my issue is not exactly that. Also, the issue appears when I am logged in normally. Furthermore, I am running X11.

So, now I have two questions:

  1. How can I log exactly what sddm does and why it throws the segfault?
  2. Should I consider switching to lightdm?
  3. Should I consider switching to wayland?

I would like to have your feedback on these thoughts.

While I can’t help with your other questions, Wayland seems stable (for me) on AMD graphics for the past year.

I’m afraid I can’t offer any advice with Nvidia/Wayland, except to mention that the combination seems to be more troublesome generally. A cursory search of the forum should reveal many previous issues.

Consider starting Plasma with an empty session, at least until you have found a resolution.
