Application Launcher, Add Widgets, Show Alternatives, and others no longer open after update

After an update I did today via pacman -Syu and a reboot (kernel update was included apparently), I can no longer open my application launcher. Alt + F1, Meta key, and clicking the icon in the bottom panel don’t do anything. To add to that, I can also no longer open the menus to add widgets or show alternatives. Applications that I had previously pinned to the taskbar still open and work, and all icons within the system tray still work, except for “Manjaro Settings Manager,” which does nothing when clicked.

Where did I go wrong here? The updates were around 1 GB (as they probably included a bunch of non-system updates like Firefox, etc.), but I don’t know where to find a log of my recent updates, as I have already rebooted and the terminal is empty now.

Can I get my system working again or do I have to Timeshift back?

Replying with some more information:
sudo pamac clean deleted 0 files and sudo pamac checkupdates told me that my system was up to date. I then timeshifted to a backup from 10th April and everything was fine under kernel 5.9, until I reinstalled kernel 5.11. Once I was running 5.11 again, I was back to the problem described above. Trying to boot 5.9 from grub stranded me on an error screen, where I was told that boot/efi couldn’t be mounted. 5.11, however, booted just fine.

So I timeshifted once again and for that specific boot I had a running system with kernel 5.9 from a week ago. However, the problem persists, once I reboot even with kernel 5.9 running.

I’m now completely stumped … Since I’m running a dual-boot system, I guess it’s back to Windows for now.

I have a similar problem. Kate is fine but my full screen application dashboard won’t open. Fortunately, I also have an application launcher. This works fine, but when I left click on it, I can’t use any of the options. I have used timeshift to rollback, but that means the updates aren’t installed. When I reinstall them, I’m back to the same issues. I have updated via pamac, then via the terminal (-Syu).

Yet more info:
I fell for a misconception here: Timeshift happened to also revert my kernel back to 5.9, but everything was fine only for that very first boot after Timeshift. Once I reboot my reverted machine—even when running 5.9—the issue re-emerges.

I have to assume now that something is happening after that first boot or during that first shut-down/restart procedure that breaks my system, but I don’t know what or how to look for the culprit.

“Solved” by doing a complete re-install of Manjaro KDE. No clue what caused the other solutions and workaround to fail.

I have pretty much the same symptoms since updating to Plasma 5.21.4. Can’t add widgets, Kate won’t run, can’t change the application launcher, etc.
I was hoping to avoid re-installing Manjaro. I tried re-installing the Plasma desktop and applications, hoping this would jump start the system, but it did not help. Has someone an idea how to proceed here?

Did you try cleaning the cache or any other configuration related troubleshooting method?

I recently noticed that there might be more k-something-git packages installed than you first find via broken dependencies. You might be able to find all of them using Pamac’s GUI and searching for “git” within your installed packages or maybe via pamac list --installed | grep ?*-git using the terminal.

The next step would then be to replace all k*-git packages with their non-git counterparts via pacman or pamac. Just an example:

sudo pacman -S kio kbookmarks
resolving dependencies...
looking for conflicting packages...
:: kio and kio-git are in conflict. Remove kio-git? [y/N]
:: kbookmarks and kbookmarks-git are in conflict. Remove kbookmarks-git? [y/N]

Then try that for all k*-git packages you find. Then, when you replaced all of them, try to open Kate, etc. again. Funnily enough this worked on another PC of mine, not on this one, though, which is why I had to try re-installing. Maybe it helps you, but make a backup and take it with a grain of salt. I’m a newbie and have no clue what I’m doing, either.

I did not try cleaning the cache, but that’s worth a try. I usually do read the arch linux news, to see if anything important shows up. I’ll go through your suggestions when I get back on that box.
Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a go.

Bad to worse. I cleaned the cache. I replaced all the files ending in -git with the standard files, twice in fact since not all of the files got changed the first time around. After this I could not get beyond the login screen; below the user/password area was the following error message: “The current theme cannot be loaded due to the errors below, please select another theme: file:///usr/share/sddm/themes/breath2/Main.qml…etc.”

I tried setting up a new user account in case my account was borked, but no help. I tried using lightdm, no help. I went to the tty screen and tried startx: got the cursor with black screen. I went into a config file and changed breath2 to breeze, no help.

So then I decided to re-install manjaro, but it’s not possible for a reason unrelated to the actual problem. My laptop is running in MBR/BIOS mode, but all USB sticks insist on starting in UEFI mode. The BIOS does not have the settings needed to change this. (Fujitsu Lifebook E782)

So now I’m hoping for a way to rescue my manjaro installation without re-installing. Any ideas?

First of all, I would advise you to create a new topic with a description of your specific issues, your own output for inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width, as well as everything you tried so far and the outcomes. That’s not only helpful to others, but might also help you in the future.

Second: Can you Timeshift back to before you applied the most recent changes using the terminal? I’ll check my other laptop’s pacman.log for which k*-git packages exactly I replaced:

  • kio
  • user-manager
  • karchive
  • kiconthemes
  • ktextwidgets
  • kwallet
  • kxmlgui
  • kbookmarks
  • kauth
  • kconfigwidgets
  • kcodecs
  • knotifications
  • kcompletion
  • kconfig
  • kglobalaccel
  • kservice
  • kcoreaddons
  • kcrash
  • kjobwidgets
  • kdbusaddons
  • kguiaddons
  • ki18n
  • kitemviews
  • kwidgetsaddons
  • kwindowsystem

@fhonb: Thanks for your reply. However I discovered a way to boot the install USB in MBR/BIOS mode, so I took the path of least resistance and re-installed Manjaro. I’ll describe the boot solution in the installation section.
