Annoying error at boot: RDRAND is not reliable on this platform; disabling

Hello,

Recently I’ve been starting to get this very annoying RDRAND error, that I’m not yet entirely sure if its affecting my boot time or not.

I searched for solutions, and came across a grub command called “nordrand” that worked on my Ubuntu but not on Manjaro.

I believe the issue is somehow related to my AMD CPU from all the reading I’ve been doing ever since the error started.

Here’s my system’s info:

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.

[HowTo] Provide System Information

  1. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

(Wisdom lies in reading  )

What I found when asking Google for the error message:

Linux To Drop "nordrand" Option - Users Should Instead Switch To "random.trust_cpu" - Phoronix

HTH

Thanks for helping me understand better on how to post questions! My bad

I forgot to mention I found about this parameter as well but It did not work for me unfortunately :frowning:

Well, judging from the inxi output you just posted
you do not have either one parameter added to the grub command line :man_shrugging:

I removed any edits made to /etc/default/grub that did not solve the problem

What is the problem then?
The fact that you see a message?
… because: this is not an error message

The problem at the end of the day is, since I’m not the most linux savy guy, I’m not sure if this is causing any slowdowns at boot, or any other issues.

But if you tell me it doesn’t, and I can just ignore it, I will gladly mark the post as solved!

Thanks for the help.

For reference only, I have almost the exact same CPU and do not see any reference in my logs to RDRAND.

CPU:
Info: model: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 bits: 64 type: MT MCP arch: Zen 2 gen: 3
    level: v3 note: check built: 2020-22 process: TSMC n7 (7nm) family: 0x17 (23)
    model-id: 0x71 (113) stepping: 0 microcode: 0x8701021

The only difference I spot is the microcode field and I do not know if that is relevant or what that exactly means.

By what I read, it could be that your motherboard is on a firmware that doesnt cause this issue, as some people stated updating it as the solution.
