AMDGPU losts hardware video acceleration (va-api/vdpau) at recent update?

With the recent update of Manjaro it appears that AMD GPU (Radeon) have lost much of their hardware video acceleration support.
Have they made any changes?

I just noticed that mpv video player I was using did not enable hardware video decoding by default and was using software decoding. This was causing high CPU usage. I noticed this because VLC was noticably better. I have a intel gpu and adding hwaccel=vaapi to the config worked fine. But this made me paranoid. If mpv was not using VAAPI by default for video decoding, other software might be similarly affected. Is there a system level control of this? Or do I have to check this for each ap…

I know I’m being thick, but if you know of any solutions, please let me know.
I want to use hardware H264 for encoding in ffmpeg, is there any other way than building mesa myself?

That’s a very loaded and opinionated question — specifically, your use of the word “worth”. Besides, if you have a (slightly) older install image laying around, then you can still install Manjaro with all of those codecs ready-to-use out-of-the-box. And if you don’t, then I’m sure the AUR will offer solace. The only thing that has changed is that those codecs will no longer be installed by default in a new Manjaro installation. In a way, you can liken it to Debian…

Regarding the disabling of hardware acceleration for proprietary video codecs on AMD - I think the Arch Wiki hasn’t been updated yet, because it still says… ATI and AMDGPU open-source drivers support both VA-API and VDPAU So I’m a bit confused as to whether I can re-enable it or I just have to live with this now…

I have read on and it seems that there is basically no solution other than to build mesa.
In my case, the problem is only video encoding, so I decided to surpass it by installing amf-amdgpu-pro from AUR and using h264_amf instead of h264_vaapi.

just compile vesa, or there is mesa-git, from AUR, it just works… just couple of minutes…
i didn’t bothered with software/hardware, but totem didn’t work at all…

Mesa is now maintained by Manjaro and won’t ship with patent encumbered codecs . Do I see this right, that it is not worth to install manjaro on my freshly ordered amd thinkpad ?
