AMD Renoir (4800H, 1660ti) KDE: External Monitor No Display

I removed all xorg.conf* from /etc/X11/ because it was messed up and X wasn’t started at all.
I tried to follow

  1. _https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/440.44/README/randr14.html -> X not started
  2. use nvidia-xconfig which generated this crappy config:

I suggest you remove all display related Xorg configurations. And then simply reboot without any display related configuration in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and an empty /etc/X11/xorg.conf. And then please post the most recent Xorg log.

Here it is, as you suggested - empty /etc/X11/xorg.conf files and minimal /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

What’s the output of ls -l /dev/dri/ and nvidia-smi?

Downgrading to kernel 5.9 didn’t help. But seems that driver is being loaded.

I suggest you switch to 5.10 if you have no reason to stay on 5.11. What’s the output of head -n999 /etc/modprobe.d/* and sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset?

$ head -n999 /etc/modprobe.d/*

There is no nvidia_drm module, only nvidia, but without modset parameter.

Then I loaded nvidia_drm by hand I got the following:

So it’s progress. But when I connect the monitor dmesg says no.

I think this applies. You can use optimus-manager and switch to the “nvidia” mode, I believe then you’ll be able to use the external displays. Since you have an AMD GPU, you’ll need to install optimus-manager-git from the AUR. If you use GNOME and GDM, you’ll need to install gdm-prime from the AUR as well.

@pobrn So after attempting to reinstall the hybrid-amdgpu-nvidia drivers I now get an improvement!

I can see the external monitor via the USB-C, however still no display TO the monitor.

I’ve tried installing optimus-manager-git, however after restarting the external monitor disappears. I think this may be the culprit.

Secondary issue is now when I “enable” the external monitor it doesn’t save the enablement after applying. Re-opening display config consistently only shows the laptop monitor enabled.

nvidia settings can also now see the external monitor:

It won’t work unless you make the NVIDIA GPU primary.

Turns out a downgraded copy of cmake was breaking optimus-manager installation. I’ve upgraded my cmake and re-installed optimus. After a restart I was finally able to switch modes, and like you proposed

optimus-manager --switch nvidia

enabled display out to the external monitor.

edit:
I will write up a step-by-step process for others to follow this evening. It required updating switching to 5.11, updating evdi manually, updating displaylink after the manual evdi configuration, then re-installing optimus-manager and making the switch to nvidia.
