After last Update only CLI and startx-error

Hello Forum,

after the last update my Notebook only starts to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I am able to switch to another session (Fx-CTR) and to log in. I updated the system (without action because it’s already up to date) and to type “startx”. I also tried to boot with an older Kernel but without success.

As I have to write this from another computer now I am consolidating the output after typing “startx”:

xf86EnableIO: failed to enable I/O ports 0000-03ff (Operation not permitted)
vesa: Refusing to run, Framebuffer or dri device present
Fatal server error: (EE) no screens found
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error

As I am not able to past from the Terminal at my Notebook I would be happy if somone would help me out understanding how to provide additional information if needed.

However, as I am not deep into linux and this is my first error within my new Manjaro enviroment I would be most thankful if someone could help me bringing my Notebook back to be able to work again.

Robert

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information. [HowTo] Provide System Information
  2. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

Please install 2 kernels (one of them LTS)

Thank you for your answer. I am able to read the output on my Notebook. How am I able to transfer it to another computer please? Additionally a am not able to see the entire message as I am only able to roll back three times and the output is longer.

As written I have several kernels installed and I already used an older one (unfortunately with no effect).

It may be useless to try an kernel that is EOL.
If you want to try another, try a LTS-kernel like 5.15 5.10 or even 5.4

Try using a live-manjaro (from USB) to investigate. Then you can post what you find. Or you could copy text to another USB

Hi,

I have the same issue. (posting from an old live usb, chroot to my system and derived info from there) → that is why the kernel is reported as 5.6.15-1-MANJARO

I used mhwd-kernel command to install the latest (linux519) kernel, while I am normally running the linux515 LTS.

I rebooted into both kernels, including the ‘fall-back’ with the same result.

boot.log ends here:

[ OK ] Started Authorization Manager.
         Starting Modem Manager...
[ OK ] Finished Permit User Sessions.
Starting Hold until boot process finishes up...
         Starting Terminate Plymouth Boot Screen...

I suspect that the Plymouth is not terminated correctly?
How can I force it? Or disable it?

Do you remember installing video-vesa? If so, remove it.

Hi Mithrial, no, I did not. I just did the last update without installing extra software.

Hello  I am booting with 5.15.49 and tried it also with 5.10.124 but no success.

Seems your videodriver does not work

But i do not know which driver is necessary :man_shrugging:

OK. Is there any way to reinstall the driver (autodetect or sth similar) or find out, which driver was installed respectively is needed?

I really hope not to setting the notebook up again as a whole.

According to https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Configure_Graphics_Cards I forced reinstalling the shown three video drivers with

sudo mhwd -f -i pci [name of driver]

Unfortunately with now success…

Does anybody does have an additional way for me fixing my problem?

My logfile resides under /var/log
Do you use custom config-files that may be the source of the problem ?

Try running pamac install xf86-video-fbdev and then run startx

I had a similar problem earlier and this let me start KDE, although I’m running an Nvidia GPU and not Intel integrated graphics like it seems you are.

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately this did not help.

Just out of curiosity, does a live Manjaro USB stick boot up for you? If so, perhaps start investigating from there…? I consider myself a newbie as far as Manjaro is concerned, so…
