Adjusting audio volume after resuming from sleep mutes it completely

Hi ,

Manjaro test here with all the latest updates applied (September) and I have a problem with audio volume adjusting. I use my keyboard multimedia keys to adjust audio volume and suddenly after the latest update I noticed that every time my system resumes from sleep and I try to adjust the volume, it mutes completely. The only way to get the audio output back is to restart pipewire along with all its associated services (pulse and wireplumber).

Hi @nikall
you formatted the output in your post with single backticks ` line by line. Please reformat this removing all the backticks and instead enclose all the lines of the output between three backticks ``` on top and on the bottom. Also merge your two posts into a single one.

Beside this, it is also necessary to give full system information that is the output of

Although your question is about audio one can’t tell what the cause is, and this information is also important for other user’s with a similar issue to compare with their system.

Please in the future first click the </> button and then paste between the 3 ticks. Doing it the other way around - pasting, selecting, clicking the button leads to this weirdness which you did. It is not your fault, it is a discourse anti-feature.

Complete system information as requested. Thanks for the correction though it’s a really annoying “feature” of the discource.

I’m puzzled about this. Do you need the first audio device? Or can you check if the problem persists if you disable it?

No I don’t need the HDMI output but this wasn’t a problem until the latest update.

Besides, I have it already disabled in the KDE sound settings (just noticed it).

I want to figure out whether it is the culprit. The change could come from driver or kernel updates.

The first command gives no output.

The second shows some issue (I just put my system back to sleep and resume it in order to reproduce the problem)

The third command has no use given the output of the previous.

If you click on the dropdown menu showing Off, it should be possible to change the card profile to use an active profile - for example Analog Stereo Output - if such profiles are available

Please post more information to show available profiles

pactl list cards

The only other available profile right now is Pro Audio (which never worked in the first place). If I restart the pipewire, pipewirepules and wireplumber there will be more profiles available.

The output for the commmand:

To me looks like the ALC1220 is completely disabled (or not detected).

In the latest update I noticed that wireplumber package was updated. Should I try to downgrade it and see if that fixes the issue ?

To give you a better picture of my system’s struggles with sleep. I use linux for almost 30 years but mostly on headless setups as a server and on my laptops. The last 9 months I decided to go full Linux on my desktop and it was then that I found out that my desktop has a problem with sleep mode. After almost a month of search and troubleshooting I discovered this post where a solution was provided by someone who had a similar motherboard.

https://artemis.sh/2023/04/09/b550i-pro-ax-linux-suspend-sleep.html

I applied this fix and since then I was able to put the system on sleep and wake it up most of the times without issues. However some of the times (around 10%) the system will wake up and then becomes incredibly laggy or unresponsive. I haven’t been able to figure out what’s the culprit so far.
However this audio volume bug is completely new and appeared after the latest update.

You said you wouldn’t need the NVidia audio device and you had it disabled in the KDE settings but it is there. Can you really disable it at the lower level, perhaps even at the BIOS level? I tend to think this NVidia audio device is related to the issue.

That’s a discrete GPU, I can’t do it in the BIOS. I will search how I can do it in the initramfs or maybe doing a module blacklisting. I don’t know to be honest.

@jofi

Should it be enough to blacklist snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi under /etc/modprobe.d ?

Could this be related to my issue ? I can pass this option to the kernel boot parameters. Looks the most straight forward solution.

I don’t think this is related to your issue. fbdev stands for frame buffer device.

I can’t test on my system since it’s intel only. I would try

# /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-hdmi-audio.conf
options snd-hda-intel enable=0,1

assuming the nvidia audio device stays on the first position.

pactl list cards data shows information for HDA NVidia card only and card is disabled

pactl list cards
Card #591
        Name: alsa_card.pci-0000_07_00.1

               alsa.card = "0"
               alsa.card_name = "HDA NVidia"

               alsa.id = "NVidia"

Active Profile: off

But there is no data for onboard audio device alsa_card.pci-0000_09_00.4 to compare with pactl info and pactl list sinks data in previous posts

               alsa.card = "1"
               alsa.card_name = "HD-Audio Generic"

               alsa.id = "Generic"

I suggest:

  1. Reboot system to get both devices detected and working normally
  2. Check both devices are detected as playback devices in ALSA: - aplay -l
  3. Get card data when audio playback is working: pactl list cards
  4. Suspend and resume system
  5. If audio playback is not working after resume, get card data pactl list cards

Fix Linux Suspend/Sleep in Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro AX

2023-04-09
Linux won’t sleep on this motherboard out of the box. I have a rev1.1 motherboard running BIOS version F17b. No idea if this applies to rev1.2. There’s a workaround you can do which is to disable PCIe wakeup on GPP0 (GPP bridge to the m.2 NVMe drives)

inxi data in previous post does not show a revision number so motherboard is likely rev 1.0
Data shows system is using BIOS version F18

Updating BIOS might be helpful for problems with NVMe drives and onboard audio

What version of wireplumber?

Thank you all for the replies.

Just applied a new update for wireplumber and libwireplumber that solved the problem (it came with a new mass update just 2 hours ago).

[2026-09-05T17:25:40+0300] [ALPM] upgraded wireplumber (0.5.16-1 -> 0.5.17-1)
[2026-09-05T17:25:36+0300] [ALPM] upgraded libwireplumber (0.5.16-1 -> 0.5.17-1)

And the update that caused the problem (two days ago)

[2026-09-03T11:19:19+0300] [ALPM] upgraded wireplumber (0.5.15-1 -> 0.5.16-1)
[2026-09-03T11:19:15+0300] [ALPM] upgraded libwireplumber (0.5.15-1 -> 0.5.16-1)

So it was a bug in wireplumber obviously.

Case closed.
