Add/remove software closes during every update now

[Fred_VIE]

Since the last kernel update the add/remove software gui force closes while updating. The update finished in the background though which got apparent when I started it again and it wouldnt let me update saying that an update is in progress already.

System shows 6.15.7-1 but it said it updates the Kernel with todays update and I am not sure if it shows the updated version already - I guess usually just after a restart so it should be since this version.

Is that a known issue?

Which version of pamac you use? We have the GTK3 version pamac-gtk3 and pamac-gtk, which is based on GTK4. Both are designed for GTK based UIs like GNOME or XFCE. For Plasma6 you can try to use Octopi.

@philm

Which version of pamac you use?

Pamac GTK4 v11.7.3-3. I have never manually changed pamac.

[philm]

Well, try with pamac-gtk3 then. Might work better in Plasma 6 …

[Fred_VIE]

Since I had problems with pamac in Cachy-OS as well and installed Octopi there to see if this one is better I will go with that.

Basically just because I have been told that updating/downgrading specific apps alone can cause all sorts of problems.

Updating one application can work or may not work, if that application needs some libraries. However you can still try to use pacman -Syu followed by updating a graphical package manager …

This may happen if important files are updated.

Large updates on stable branch should not be executed in GUI as it may break the process.

there is also a CLI version of pamac which is used like this: pamac update

@linux-aarhus

Large updates on stable branch should not be executed in GUI as it may break the process.

That would be a good reason.

I was just confused because I did not see this behavior in 3 years.

[philm]

I think most Plasma 6 users reported lately that pamac UI is not so stable. I’ve no issues here on XFCE and GNOME users also less report by it. Pamac is developed in GNOME and not very well tested in other desktop environments. In the past we shipped Octopi with our Plasma edition.

I thought it was sudo pacman -Syu?

Here is an example output of my system. I use unstable branch but barley update …

I guess I prefer the GUI because I would like to see what is being updated. Even more so because in Kubuntu the update used Kernels that did not work which was a bug when one was using an NV card.

Also I do not want to always update the Kernel right away because of some bugs.

Also I wanted to update because I did not install mesa-git on Manjaro and kinda am waiting for the 25.2 Version to test it vs Cachy-OS.

I know the commands for checking what is going to be updated but for me the GUI is more comfortable.

@philm

there is also a CLI version of pamac

I thought it was sudo pacman -Syu?

pacman and pamac are two very different things.

• pacman is the original (and command-line-only) package manager from Arch Linux.

• pamac is a package manager specifically developed by and for Manjaro. It uses the Arch ALPM database in the background, but it has both a command-line interface and a graphical interface, the latter currently existing in two variations, i.e. pamac-gtk3 and pamac-gtk, which is gtk4-based.

  Unlike pacman, pamac also has access to the AUR, and can be used for installing Snaps and FlatPaks. The pamac GUI is what is listed in your system menu as the “Add/Remove Software” utility.

As @philm said, there is also octopi, which is a qt6-based graphical front-end to pacman and — if enabled — to an AUR helper application, such as yay.

octopi also comes with its own notifier icon, and is far more attuned to the Plasma environment, even though it can of course also be used in other environments.

The look & feel of octopi is very different from the one in the pamac GUI, though. Ironically, the pamac GUI has a look & feel very reminiscent of KDE’s own discover application — which you should not use in Arch-derivative distributions, because it uses packagekit in the background — whereas the look & feel of octopi is more akin to Debian’s synaptic package manager.
