Youtube disharges battery same as If I'm gaming

I’m struggling with bad battery life on manjaro for a long time,
I mostly have fast discharge when I’m watching youtube(or use youtube music, but it’s a bit slower then).
How suprised I was, when I found out that my system uses same amount of power by running minecraft(on higher screen brightness).

I don’t know what’s the problem is with video rendering, that it consumes 12-14w of power(according to powertop) when freaking minecraft(with high settings, best render distance and I’m hosting a local server) consumes ~14.5w. It’s not quite equaly demanding tasks.

Does it happen with any YouTube video? I thought they migrated most of them to use VP9 codec now.

So basically I can either switch to proprietary drivers or use mesa-git.
I know disadvantages of using git version, but what are the disadvantages of using proprietary drivers compared to open source ones?

They’re not as well maintained. AMD is an odd one.

With Nvidia, it’s reversed: proprietary drivers are worlds superior than nouveau

With AMD, better performance, reliability, and modernity is found in the open-source amdgpu driver.

Go figure.

In a sense, you’d be installing “supplemental” drivers/packages on top of your existing amdgpu drivers.


They created an all-in-one “package base” in the AUR: AUR (en) - amdgpu-pro-installer
