XFCE won’t boot after update, screen flashing on and off

Hi

First off, I am a complete noob so I’m probably going to need some level of hand-holding to fix this.

I’m running a dual boot Windows 10/Manjaro XFCE MSI laptop with a NVidia GeForce 920M graphics card.

After updating my system today, I restarted as the system requested. Reached grub menu fine, selected my Manjaro system, then the screen started flashing on and off and did not load past the MSI logo.

At this point I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F2 (as per google search), the screen kept flashing on and off but showed a black screen with a single white cursor instead of the MSI logo. I couldn’t type anything or get a reaction from this.

Next, I booted into a live ISO USB (running very old version). I followed the post: Manjaro does not boot after update - emergency shell
I managed to mount my broken system and ran pacman -Syyu (it said there was nothing to be done). I also ran update-grub successfully.

When I turned on my laptop, the grub menu did not show at all. When I pressed F11 to load up the laptop’s own boot menu and select Manjaro, the screen again flashed on and off and showed the MSI logo.

Next I used these two commands as per the above linked thread:

  1. sudo mhwd -r pci $(mhwd -li | grep ‘video-’ | awk ‘{print $1}’)
  2. sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

Now, the grub menu still does not show but when I boot in via F11 menu, I get the message [FAILED] failed to start Light Display Manager.

That is as far as I have got. I’m trying to keep calm about it but I am very much out of my depth with this. Any help is appreciated.

I’m not sure if I need to provide xrandr output, if so please tell me exactly what I need to type in because I haven’t figured it out.

Provide basic Information from live environment:

What kernels do you have installed?

mhwd-kernel -li

Currently running: 5.4.6-2-MANJARO (linux54)
The following kernels are installed in your system:

  • linux54

That’s not right, it’s at 5.4.173-1 in the repositories.

Do you mean  ?

Now open a Terminal, thats in icons a black rectangle…
Then enter the command:
sudo manjaro-chroot -a
Asks for Password, that is: manjaro

Yes that is what I did.

Did you also do so when you checked the list of kernels installed?
If you did, that would mean you haven’t updated your system for a long while… It would make (hopefully) more sense had you not, showing the kernel from the liveUSB instead.

Do I need to enter the chroot command multiple times? I have not exited the live environment at all since I put the command in and the command line still starts with [manjaro /]# rather than [manjaro@manjaro ~]$ which it was before I ran the chroot command.

As for whether I’ve updated the kernel, if running sudo pacman -Syyu doesn’t update kernel, then I probably haven’t.

@maycne.sonahoz Dont get confused. Currently running is the live kernel ; even after chroot
Whereas list installed means the installed system on the disk

Otherwise chroot would depend on the kernel on disk. An then you would not be able to repair a damaged kernel.

i think mhwd-kernel uses same way as uname to determine kernel. But looks into /boot to find installed kernels.

If you want to know the exact kernel installed, you can use

maxi -kv

or

cat /boot/*.kver
4.19.225-1-MANJARO x64
5.10.93-1-MANJARO x64
5.15.16-1-MANJARO x64

Well, that’s impractical… Thanks for the clarification.

Alright, next step is to find some logs.

journalctl --catalog --priority=3 --boot=-1

Ok, so cat /boot/*.kver says: 5.4.173-1-MANJARO x64

And here’s those logs:

On the right track, let’s get all logs about the lightdm service.

On my system lightdm did restart 20 times because xorg was not running
You may find detailed infos in /var/log/…
Look for logs of xorg and lightdm

Here’s your problem: lightdm looks for optimus-manager – which you installed for managing your GPUs i suppose – but fails to find it.
Lucky you, others also had the issue and documented it: AUR (en) - optimus-manager

  • the package needs to be rebuilt following the python update
  • a required library has changed package, you need to get the new one
pamac install mesa-utils
pamac build optimus-manager

First command went through fine, second one failed:

Warning: Building packages as dynamic user
Warning: Setting build directory to /var/cache/pamac

To build (1):
  optimus-manager 1.4-3 (1.4-1) AUR

Edit build files : [e]
Apply transaction ? [e/y/N] y

Cloning optimus-manager build files...
System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down
Error: Failed to build optimus-manager

That’s unexpected. Sadly i have a hard time understanding how that could be… :cold_sweat:

I have a few ideas to proceed, unless someone else comes up with a better one:

  • Try booting into your system now. Hopefully, having installed mesa-utils may be sufficient for optimus-manager to start. Then you may be able to update the latter.
  • Remove optimus-manager and try booting into your system. lightdm may then use whatever GPU to start X, and once logged in, you may install optimus-manager back. The idea here is, since optimus-manager is from AUR, it shouldn’t be required for your system to boot.

Your second suggestion worked and I’m back in. Thank you so much @maycne.sonahoz & @andreas85!!
