Xfce amd iGPU inconsistent graphical crashes

lenovo ideapad slim 5 g10 AMD ryzen AI 350 w/ 860M iGPU - 14" 16:10 1200p 60Hz, scale 0.90
all default with some additional AMD/mesa libs installed, switched kernel to 6.17.1-0-MANJARO

installed latest desktop XFCE manjaro 2 days ago from official, and I encounter heavy graphical issues
first issue is at computer startup, it flickers a few times, each flicker last about a second spaced by ~3s
second issue is the big deal with complete visual crash, it takes about 10min to a few hours before triggering, and is unrecoverable
the screen freezes completely only the mouse moves and everything else is hard stuck
hovering over button sometimes does changes the mouse cursor but this also crashes after a few second
there is no obvious user activity or app that trigger the issue
restarting systemctl lightmd using tty2 does fix the issue but it also wipes the session into fresh start, it allows me to not require a full hardware restart with FDE but still wipes any unsaved data
using the default kernel 6.16.18-0 was much worse, with the issue taking a few minutes to 15min before triggering (same effects but only one shorter flicker at start)

I guess it is from the fact that 860M is so recent and drivers not well develloped, but if there is a workaround at least for the crashes it would be very cool

I’m curious — are you using a Wayland or X11 session?
I had a similar issue on KDE, and simply switching to X11 fixed the screen flickering immediately.

Keep in mind that Wayland in XFCE is only experimental, so if you’re using it, switching to X11 might be the simplest solution.

As you mentioned, the problem is likely related to your new GPU and drivers. It’s hard to give precise advice without logs, though. Could you share the output of:

journalctl -b -p err

Welcome to the Manjaro community @NNjoe

What additional AMD/mesa libs are installed? Please post the output of the following command:

pamac search -i amd && pamac search -i mesa

Also, please read the following pre-prepared information and ensure you post the output of inxi -zv8:

Manjaro Xfce uses X11 by default

Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.18 compositor: xfwm4 v: 4.20.0

Wayland is recommended for advanced Xfce users only

Xfce 4.20 tour

Wayland

Important Notice: Please be aware that the Wayland support in Xfce 4.20 is experimental. It is recommended for advanced users only, as you may encounter bugs and experience incomplete functionality. Proceed with caution!

Test with the scale at 1.0

Or switch branch to unstable which makes it possible to use the latest 6.17 and 6.18rc3.
(using double y to force new metadata)

sudo pacman-mirrors -aS unstable && sudo pacman -Syyu linux618

Wayland support is much more mature with Plasma or Gnome.

as nikgomic said, currently using x11 as it is default

I tried many things inside of power management and display settings, all feature works as expected and do not affect the mentioned issue at all

I will try to switch to unstable 618 and report in a few hours

tried enabeling tlp as stated by journalctl and switched to 6.18 using the provided command
issues are the same if not wosre as the flickering at start are now longer

I am not sure if you need the xf86-video-amdgpu package.

I would think the mesa package would be enough.

I am fairly certain your issue is caused by conflicting drivers - perhaps removing the xf86-video-amdgpu package and a reboot could provide some insight.

Test if removing the package help

sudo pacman -Rns xf86-video-amdgpu

For decades I have shunned AMD - but lately I have been investing in AMD based hardware and I have not been disappointed.

I have a Lenovo X13 gen.4 (AMD 7840U / Radeon 780M) and a Lenovo P620 workstation with AMD 7900 XTX GPU both using Wayland and Plasma - it work without any notable issues.

Your system is a slightly newer - which is why I suggested the newer kernel and the latest available in the repo on unstable branch.

Setting and odd scaling factor may be contributing - especially on X11.

still on 6.18, same setup as before but removed xf86 package
I must have installed it as a dependency of some other package required for hashcat
the flickering at start is entirely and consistently gone

will close the issue if I don’t have any crash before tmr
thanks a lot

edit :
I rarely still have some flickering at start but it very likely is an other issue and the crashes are gone so I consider the removal of xf86 as the solution
