Xbox controller only works with Proton 9 – not detected in newer versions

Hello!
I’m having a strange issue and I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced something similar.

I’m using kernel 6.12, a Microsoft Xbox wireless dongle, and an Xbox Series controller.

After installing xone-dkms and the dongle firmware from the AUR:

The controller is correctly detected, both wired and wirelessly through the dongle. Even in Steam Big Picture mode, I can navigate menus without any problems. However, no game detects the controller. The only thing that works is pressing the Xbox button to open Steam’s overlay.

After further testing, I discovered that the issue only happens when using Proton versions newer than 9 (e.g., Proton 10, Experimental, Hotfix). On Proton 9, everything works as expected.

Unfortunately, some of the games I play run significantly worse on Proton 9, so I’m trying to find a fix.

Additionally:

  • This issue also happens with xpad (when connecting the Xbox Series controller via USB), so it’s not exclusive to xone.
  • I tested a Switch Pro Controller via Bluetooth and a wired Xbox 360 controller, and both have the same issue.
  • I tried different kernels (6.6 and 6.15), but the behavior remains unchanged.

I opened a report on the Proton GitHub, but I’d love to hear if anyone else on Manjaro has found a workaround or solution.

Thanks in advance! :bowing_man:

Well, I never have (and never will) use an Xbox, which means I can’t offer anything overly constructive concerning this issue.

However, the following may be helpful to you and also to those who might wish to help; please provide system information as described (below).

I’m sure someone will help when they are able.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Hi soundofthunder, thanks for the reply!

This issue happens with all the controllers I’ve tested, both when connected wirelessly using xone, and via USB (with both xone and xpad). The problem only occurs when launching games through Steam. For example, I tried Super Tux Kart outside of Steam, and the controller works perfectly.

So if you’re using a controller in Steam and it works for you, any details you can share would be really helpful — like your Proton version, kernel, how you connect the controller, or any other relevant configuration.

Thanks again!

Quick tip: Type @ and a modal will appear allowing you to select a user from a dropdown. This has the benefit of ensuring you don’t spell a user’s name incorrectly, and notifying them that they have been mentioned; without that, they may never know.

The only controller I use is a keyboard, unfortunately.

However, if any of those games (via Steam) are Windows based, then this recent note in Known Issues and Solutions may have some bearing on it; albeit not directly:

WINE with WoW64 is known to be not as performant as previous iterations using pure 32-bit. Perhaps it’s worth seeing what Valve might have to say about it.

Otherwise, I can only suggest searching forum topics in case anyone else has a similar issue, and wait for input from others (many gamers use Manjaro and might have encountered this already).

Regards.

Perhaps it could help. Please try to disable “Steam Input”. It can be done via Steam > Settings > Controller > Enable Steam Input for Xbox controllers toggle it to disable. After in the same window, scroll down to Non-Game Controller Layouts > Desktop Layout then Edit, and click in Disable Steam Input.

Hi @RuKsu! Thanks for the suggestion. Sadly, it didn’t work.
