I stumbled over the following wording “necro-bumping”, used by an Admin. As I never heard of this, and the thread was closed with this phrase, I would like to know what this means!
My translation engine is helpless.

Ah, yes. ![]()
Necro-bumping is posting to a thread that has no longer been posted to in months or even years, and because of this, the information on the thread is therefore already outdated.
In addition to that, we maintain a policy of “one problem per user and per thread”. Therefore, posting to someone else’s thread about a problem they have in order to tell us “I have that problem too!” is useless, given that the cause or even the nature of your problem may be something completely different.
Therefore, instead of going the #MeToo route, you should then start your own thread and describe your problem there, into detail, and — we cannot stress this enough — with proper information about your system, preferably at least an inxi output.
That all said, we quite regularly see loads of new threads about the exact same problem appearing after a bundled update to the Stable branch because people didn’t look at the relevant Stable Updates thread first, where in 99.9% of the cases, the problem was already addressed — often as a known issue, as explained in post #2 of each and every Stable Updates thread.
Forum Rules - Old Threads/“Necro-Bumping”
Do your part to keep the forums tidy. Posting in old threads, or “necrobumping” is generally discouraged in the technical issue subforums, since it can potentially create disjointed “zombie” information; outdated posts with data which is no longer relevant due to Manjaro’s rolling nature, combined with more recent posts reflecting more current circumstance. Furthermore, technical support threads should remain succinct, and multiple pages are to be avoided if possible.
Rules of thumb
- If you have a question, start a new thread and link to the old if relevant.
- If you have something to add and judge that your information is related, but more up-to-date, start a new thread and link to the old if desired, but avoid duplicating effort by posting information already contained in the Manjaro wiki.
- If you have a version-agnostic or corresponding solution, necrobumping can be appropriate.
Urban Dictionary: necrobump
verb: (internet) To revive a long dormant forum thread by adding a new post, thus bringing it to the top of the forum list.
Thanks a lot! I agree to what you say. Nevertheless, wording like this was entirely new to me. And if even my translation engine refuses to “understand” this is a bit critical for new forum users. ![]()
Next time I will ask Perplexity first. ![]()
There is also another distantly related and lesser used phrase - “flogging a dead horse” - I imagine a translator would have some difficulty with that too. ![]()
“Necro bumping” and some others are mentioned in;
That article, and several others, we encourage every new forum member to read. Unfortunately, that encouragement is largely ignored by many. ![]()
I prefer this!
because in this cae I always have in mind an old Indian riding a young horse or me riding whatever aged horse or whoever.
