Window authentication appears out of my screens

Hi, this started happening after the big update.

When I try to open timeshift (or other software that requires root permissions), the authentication window opens off-screen and I can’t see it. I always have to click on the taskbar and then press Ctrl + Alt + Arrow keys to bring it onto one of my screens, or use Right click → More → Move.

I don’t know what’s causing this, but I’d like the window to appear centered on my screen like it did before.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @ZeR0ByTe,

All I can offer is that you confirm the monitor you wish it to appear on is your primary monitor.

Thanks for your reply @Mirdarthos and yes, it’s my primary monitor.
I don’t know what is happening :frowning:

I don’t know, either. But I have seen some placement errors personally on my end as well. But nothing like that.

It might not be a solution, but there is a workaround answer for you for the meantime:

You could simply create a window rule and force it to always be on the correct monitor.

It could be a DE gtk/qt theming issue. Please provide

I don’t think that the window position is a user-settable option.

It is, from the vantage of the window manager, but with a caveat.

Plasma allows you to override the application’s preferences for window position — and you can even enforce this by way of window rules — but the application itself has to allow for it as well, and sometimes the two are at odds with one another, which then usually means that the application wins the power struggle and puts its window where it damn well pleases. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I tried to apply rules for the window but it doesn’t work

Here you have the details @Wollie:

Have you tried to login using Wayland?

I don’t want to use Wayland because there are a lot of apps I need for work, like Zoom or Slack, and they don’t work properly on Wayland

Thanks for your suggestion

They should still be supported by xwayland, which is running an X11 instance as a client on top of Wayland.

I would create a new user and login into it. Sometimes it’s a question of settings of whatever app. If it’s better we have a starting point.

The problem is sharing the screen in both :frowning:

Tomorrow I will try and create a new user and I will write here again.

Thanks both

Hi @Wollie and @Aragorn, sorry for the delay.

I created a new user called test with the default KDE configuration, and when I opened timeshift, the authentication dialog appeared perfectly centered on my main screen.

I don’t understand why it’s not working correctly in my user.

In the Manjaro Global Settings section of my dotfiles

you can see the customizations and tweaks I use to personalize my setup. However, before the update, the authentication dialog was always centered.

Thanks again for trying to help and if you have more ideas let me know please

Worth noting, maybe, that some time back I had issues with dialogues and Panel pop-ups appearing in the wrong places; for me, the fix was to clear ALL Window Rules.

Thanks for your reply @BG405.
I found 3 rules (only one created for me) and the others maybe by error or I don’t know, but I deleted all the rules and I have the same result :frowning:

Was this after a log-out & log-in? Not sure if it will make a difference but worth a try.

Yes, I restarted my laptop and same result. Also I deactivated kzones (Kwin script that I’m using for windows) but didn’t work it

Hi again, the only way I managed to solve the problem was by doing the following:

Right-click on the window title bar → More Actions → Configure Special Application Settings

(don’t confuse it with Configure Special Window Settings) :police_car_light:

I don’t like this solution because if I leave home and use the laptop on its own, I don’t know what will happen with the position 3310x604.

I tried using Initial placement: Centered, but it doesn’t work :frowning:

If anyone knows a better approach, I’m still open to suggestions. I don’t want to mark this as the accepted solution yet because I’m not happy with it.
