Wifi stopped working overnight Mediatek MT7922

As the title says, the wifi stopped working on my computer overnight. It was working before for the lifespan of the computer, but stopped pretty suddenly.

The main oddity of how I shut it off last night is that booting down was taking longer than usual, so I pressed the power button.

Currently, the network panel shows “no connections available” if I open it without tunneling through my phone. Bluetooth still works, at least for my mouse.

Under Manjaro Settings Manager > Hardware Configuration > Show all devices > Network Controller, I see “RTL8125 2.5GbE Controller (Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.)” and “Unknown device name (MEDIATEK Corp.)”.

I’ve tried following a couple threads to fix this, but nothing has done the job.

Could you show us which threads, please? Also a bit more system info: inxi -zv8

Welcome at the forum @shane1 :tada:

To better understand your issue, please provide some more information about your system, a start could be to post output of

inxi -Fza
dmesg | grep firmware

Also, please tell us if you have only Manjaro installed or other OS in parallel.

You said you tried already a couple of things: Please tell us what exactly, ideally in combination with the commands and messages.

Last but not least, it’s worth to study the wiki in parallel:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Network_configuration/Wireless

Have you tried what is described here already:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/723828/mt7921e-00000900-0-hardware-init-failed

Thanks for the help.

I’ll try to list what I’ve tried out, it may be difficult since I’ve been at this for a while.

I have no other operating systems installed.

Seems no driver is installed…

Yeah, that’s part of the issue, and seems odd to me since it was working fine yesterday. I think I tried reinstalling them when following one of the threads I saw, but there is a chance I messed up somewhere.

here’s what an ls at /lib/firmware/mediatek looks like

Have you tried newer kernels such as 6.10? Could be that they contain the needed firmware.

Here is another possible approach:

That stackexchange solution seems like such an absurd fix to the problem, especially since it worked. I now have wifi again. How did you find that thread?

That “how to install firmware for mediatek usb wifi adapters” guide is one of the things I followed, but the forum wasn’t letting me post links. I assume that’s because my account is brand new?

For the kernel route, I updated my kernel to 6.6 while I was dealing with this, since that was the newest one manjaro lists with the LTS tag. Should I just update to 6.10?

Thanks again for helping me fix this.

I just noticed the TP-Link part of this, just to clear that up. I bought that today to serve as a placeholder for my wifi. I didn’t get that to work before the main issue was solved, so I’ll be returning it tomorrow.

I might look for a usb wifi dongle as a backup that specifically works for Linux machines, since all the ones in the store were iffy.

If your issue is solved, there might be no need to change to kernel 6.10 for the moment, on the other hand you always could try it, it’s easy to change kernels on Manjaro. You could have also more than one kernel installed, only be aware that in this case by standard the newest kernel will be booted.

Is there any reason to hold onto the older kernels?

I switched from 6.1 to 6.6 while trying to solve the issue. It’s not like I have a use for multiple kernels at the same time.

Thanks again for the help, I don’t think I would’ve figured out the unplugged button mashing solution on my own.

Glad I could help.

For rather modern hardware I would recommend the newer kernels. So, in your case I would give 6.10 a try, if there are any issues linked to the currently used kernel.

I’m replying to this only to ask if this is a (relatively) recent change, since I remember it being a pleasant surprise when first installing Manjaro (many moons ago) not having to fiddle with /etc/default/grub to un-hide the menu, etc. . I seem to recall it using the same kernel unless you changed it in GRUB? At least within series.

Maybe because I’d installed another kernel straight away?
