Thats an approach … but I dont think it can be considered ‘how to turn off wireless power management permanently (in every case)’. iwlmvm comes to mind.

I’m about to reinstall Manjaro now. dmesg says:

b43-phy0: Broadcom 4352 WLAN found (core revision 42)
[ 13.574976] b43-phy0 ERROR: FOUND UNSUPPORTED PHY (Analog 12, Type 11 (AC), Revision 1)

I managed to install the proprietary driver in the system settings. now it says:

b43-phy0: Broadcom 4352 WLAN found (core revision 42)
[ 13.574976] b43-phy0 ERROR: FOUND UNSUPPORTED PHY (Analog 12, Type 11 (AC), Revision 1)
and
[ 2760.814431] wl: version magic '6.1.22-1-MANJARO SMP preempt mod_unload ’ should be '6.1.19-1-MANJARO SMP preempt mod_unload ’

I’m now trying to install it and then report back…

ok. I installed everything by ethernet cable, I did all the updates and it worked for an hour now. I installed steam, downloaded a game… and then suddenly it disconnects, I get an error message: limited internet connection. It worked till now without any problem.

I am connected to my router. Again. With a yellow “!”-mark.
dmesg gives me an error:
ERROR @wl_notify_scan_status:
wlpp4s0 Scan_results error (-22)

journalctl -f gives me an error:
bgscan simple: Failed to enable signal strength monitoring

journalctl -f

Does ethernet work now? If it works, does it also manifest the same issue of working for a bit, then stopping, and nothing being able to start it?

This is the same kernel version I saw the issue with, and there’s an intel nic, and the wifi broadcom (which has I believe a poor reputation for linux support).

Test on ethernet connection, if it works for days, then it’s not the issue, if it also stops after a while, it is.

Please edit your post to use proper code blocks to show program output/logs, see:

This means you are using a wrong driver version, which is compiled for a different kernel…
Reconcile what you did to install that driver and fix it to have the version for the same kernel version as you are running…

Thank you for your help!
I installed the driver by going into the system menu and clicking on the “install proprietary drivers” button. There I could click on my WIFI card and automatically install them.
So the function by Manjaro installed the wrong driver version? That is all?
Does this mean it’s better to install them in the Terminal?
How do I find the right driver version? Or should I find the right kernel fitting to the drivers?

If that is true then that is a bug you should be able to report somewhere :+1:
Most logically a new thread just about that…

You could try to first uninstall the current version and then after reboot try the DKMS version which should auto-compile for the kernels you have.
You will need to install extra packages like kernel headers for the kernels you use etc.

is the issue corrected with the new driver? that would confirm what damentz suspects about this issue, roughly, that a bug in a driver is triggering higher up erratic issues in the networking stack. Not necessarily the driver that is apparently active by the way, which I think is one reason the issue is hard to track down.

I tried to install the driver but I got error messages:

How do I install those missing kernel headers?

Like that for kernel 6.1:

pamac install linux61-headers

Ok, I managed to update / install the missing kernel headers.
Everything worked fine, I installed with sudo pacman -S broadcom-wl-dkms and after 8 minutes, the internet was gone. :frowning:

I don’t know what to do from now. I feel like I have tried so many things. And nothing works…

I did not expect the drivers to make a difference to be honest, though it was worth trying, this is more and more looking like you may have found a test case for this network vanish issue.

Obvious things to do are try installing a 5.19 kernel, and a 6.2 kernel, I know liquorix has previous kernels available for install, but I don’t know how you do that in arch based distros. If 5.19 resolves the issue then, again, you have almost certainly confirmed the issue is real and is in at least the 6.1 kernel, which is where I experienced it.

Another very obvious thing to test is first, LAN/ethernet direct connection, if that works, and keeps working, then it’s not the issue I suspect. If it also starts failing, it is certainly the issue I suspect. However, do yourself a favor, wifi introduces so many failure points, eliminate wifi from the equation and use ethernet real wired to confirm that it’s not the kernel issue, if that works, it’s just a normal wifi issue.

On the wifi end, it’s highly relevant as well to determine if the router is failing, or if the failure is actually in linux kernel itself. Low end consumer routers always ship with minimum ram or cpu power, the ones that ISPs give you for example are total junk, and could easily lead to failed or dropped wifi connections, particularly if more than one person is using them at a time, and in extra particular, if it’s a shared wifi in a household where people use their devices to stream audio or video.

Other options are that your wifi chip is failing, or the router wifi chip is failing, but is not failed, that is simple to test by using a usb wifi device that is linux compatible.

The lan connection is working.

I can definitely say that it is neither my router nor my Wi-Fi card. I’m playing video games with it on a daily basis. Without disconnects. The router is a mesh capable high end router. It works flawless. Due to the house being special I have no other possibilities than Wi-Fi.

I used my Wi-Fi extender near my PC and plugged a Ethernet cable into it. This works in Manjaro. As does tethering with my iPhone into my Wi-Fi.

So it is a driver problem. Something I haven’t figured out yet…

Please give a current inxi as well as

rfkill list
pacman -Qs broadcom
lsmod | grep 'broadcom\|wl'

And oh yeah … TLP?

systemctl status tlp

That’s useful, with wifi, the more variables you can eliminate, the higher the odds of finding a solution. I assume when you say you are playing video games with it you mean you booting into windows and having no issues, which would seem to confirm it’s a driver type issue, agreed.

wifi extender to ethernet is an excellent test of the router’s hardware as well, that’s a useful one to know about.

Check what firmware is picked for your Wifi adapter from the linux-firmware package, like this:

sudo dmesg | grep 'firmware'

Then go to /usr/lib/firmware and see what other older revisions you have for the same broadcom chip. Delete the newer ones (that are in use). Like -30 or -32 etc and leave only the oldest revision you see for your device id.

Reboot and test your WiFi connection again.

@johnbee
Maybe you can keep an eye on your logs to see what is being loged near the time the WiFi connection drops.

To do that you should open 2 terminal windows, and keep the below commands running inside them separately:

  1. To check messages from NetworkManager alone, to see the diconnection timestamp and possible other messages from it:
    journalctl --follow --unit NetworkManager

  2. To check all messages including the above, to be able to view messages from other parts of the system, around the same timestamps:
    journalctl --follow

Maybe that way you can get more info on why your WiFi connection drops when it drops…

First of all: Thank you all so much for your help and eagerness to solve my problem. I was very frustrated but you kept helping.
It works now since two hours flawless.
It works great.

I made a complete new install. Installed the Kernel headers, installed the drivers again and now it works. I’m so happy. You made my day.
