WiFi issue: wlp5s0 device is not available

I’ve been facing this issue for months now: the WiFi in my machine works fine until I try to connect to it. Right after booting the machine does recognize multiple WiFi routers in the area, and I am able to connect to mine. The problem is that after a couple of minutes the connection is closed and I get a wlp5s0 device is not available error. After this, the routers in my area don’t show up anymore in the Networks menu.

I’m running Manjaro in a ThinkPad E490 under KDE, but I should point out that this issue started coming out quite a while ago when I has elementary OS installed in my machine. At that time I noticed that after the connections got close the WiFi would show up as “switched-off by hardware” or something along this lines. After switching to Manjaro KDE started to notify me that “the wlp5s0 device is not available” after the WiFi connection fails.

I digged around a bit and I found a section on the ArchWiki page on Network Manager that mentioned Network Manager has issues with some ThinkPad models due to “WiFi drivers incorrectly reporting a soft-block”. I imagine this is the issue I am facing, but I don’t know how to verify it or what to do about it.

Could anyone help me out?

Realtek is known for its ignorance of Linux and I cannot find the RTL8822BE in the AUR, so please read this:

Especially the Linux has multiple kernels section, then try the latest delelopment kernel and hopefully the problem will go away “automagically”. :grin:

Please note that you’re on the Development bandwagon and the “Stable” kernels are less stable than LTS kernels.

I see, thanks for the help! I don’t really fancy playing around with different versions of the kernel, would replacing the WiFi card to something with better Linux support work? Any advice on regards to models?

but some company that make processors also make WiFi cards and they’re actively supporting not only in Linux but also UEFI firmware as they invented that stuff… :grin:
