Wifi Hotspot stop working

Hello,

since a couple of weeks my wifi hotspot stop working. Wifi Hotspot is available, but no traffic.
I cant reach google.com and even not ping the network gateway 10.42.0.1 from my connected phone within same network (10.42.0.138). Hotspot from Majaro USB stick will work.

Can someone help me to fix it?

What do you mean by Wifi Hotspot?

There is a route

The wireless device has no IP

So the route will not work

:thinking:

To see if I can replicate your issue, I have done the following steps - using NetworkManager GUI on my Manjaro workstation. (workstation is using Manjaro kernel 7.2.8)

Attached a USB network adapter TP-LINK TL-WN725N which is identified by the kernel as

Bus 003 Device 006: ID 0cf3:9271 Qualcomm Atheros Communications AR9271 802.11n

I have

  • New connection using the Wi-Fi (shared) profile and with SSID Hotspot
  • The connection name is Hotspot
  • The connection has no authentication - basically a public hotspot

The content of the NetworkManager configuration file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections

# cat Hotspot.nmconnection
[connection]
id=Hotspot
uuid=98cc1d12-6feb-4f48-afd4-8be90e7ab6e2
type=wifi
autoconnect=false
permissions=user:fh:;

[wifi]
mac-address=A0:F3:C1:24:72:84
mode=ap
ssid=Hotspot

[ipv4]
method=shared

[ipv6]
addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy
method=auto

[proxy]

Start the connection

 $ nmcli conn up Hotspot
Connection successfully activated (D-Bus active path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/3)

Moving to a Tuxedo laptop running TuxedoOS and connecting to the Hotspot SSID.

Connection succeeds - no issues - IP address, dhcp and route has been succesfully assigned and a working internet connection is up.

As you cannot use the wi-fi card on more than one connection at a time, I suggest you check if the wi-fi card has another active connection or attached profile as this may interfere with your intended use.

To release other profiles or connections, you may need to restart the NetworkManager service.

sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager

thank you for testing (trying to reproduce). I also don’t have this issue when i boot Manjaro from USB. I only have the problem with my current installed (and well updated) setup.
Notice: I’ve tested the last five kernels, but hotspot is still not working.

Then the time has come for you to consider other causes, right?

As I have replicated your connection naming you should expect a response somewhat similar - with a succesful start it would likely contain a different connection number or you would get an error message - a message you have yet to provide

So what is the error message?

Do you obfuscate your wi-fi mac-address?

Does your wi-fi card support ap-mode?

Yes: it support AP. Wifi and also Wifi Hotspot is usually working very well. I can connect with my Phone, but can’t reach anything. Even not the Wifi Gateway address (same network)

paul@xps-9310 ~ [10]> nmcli conn up Hotspot
Connection successfully activated (D-Bus active path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/8)

What do you mean - cannot reach anything?

Have you tried to install a terminal application on your phone and used ping 10.42.0.1 or whatever the gateway might be?

Exactly. After connection is made, my Phone is within the network of wlp114s0 (10.42.0.1/24). But “ping” the network gateway address (10.42.0.1) results in 100% package loss.

That is likely an issue on your phone.

I have checked with the Termux application on an Android phone using the un-secured network I created.

I can ping the gateway IP and a domain name without any issues.

I don’t think so, because when i reinstall Manjaro (or use the live usb stick), everything is working well!

To me it is obvious your issue is a configuration issue and I would check the configuration file for the Hotspot connection.

It is stored in the folder /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections but only accessible in root context - or using the Network Manager GUI.

Try changing the Wi-Fi security tab to use None for security then restart the connection.

If you can connect without passphrase it is related to your chosen security model.

yes, i’ve seen this files and everything should be fine:

paul@xps-9310 ~ > sudo cat /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Hotspot.nmconnection
[sudo] password for paul:
[connection]
id=Hotspot
uuid=9beb953d-008a-413f-911f-b0af7a0723ab
type=wifi
autoconnect=false
interface-name=wlp114s0

[wifi]

ssid=xps-9310

[wifi-security]

pairwise=ccmp;
proto=rsn;
psk=QtSABzc2

[ipv4]
method=shared

[ipv6]
addr-gen-mode=default
method=auto

[proxy

For comparison - I changed my connection to use wpa2/wpa3 personal and my - still - working configuration now looks like

[connection]
id=Hotspot
uuid=98cc1d12-6feb-4f48-afd4-8be90e7ab6e2
type=wifi
autoconnect=false
permissions=user:fh:;

[wifi]
mac-address=A0:F3:C1:24:72:84
mode=ap
ssid=Hotspot

[wifi-security]
key-mgmt=wpa-psk
psk=12345678

[ipv4]
method=shared

[ipv6]
addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy
method=auto

[proxy]

I suggest you delete the profile and recreate it.

I am thinking that your configuration is causing the issue here

I have deleted the profile already 1000 times but didn’t have any success (nmcli conn delete Hotspot).

can you create and start a wifi hotspot from nmcli?

paul@xps-9310 ~> nmcli dev wifi hotspot
Error: Connection activation failed: 802.1X supplicant took too long to authenticate.
  • Please stay on topic…
  • Your issue is that your hotspot is not working…
  • I suggest you look at your configuration…
  • Please compare your configuration with my working configuration…

Try a configuration with Security=None - then procceed from there…

But yes - I can - and it is working…

 $ nmcli dev wifi hotspot
Device 'wlp4s0f1u3' successfully activated with '71ff483f-8bf7-4724-9993-2b4ab60cae0e'.
Hint: "nmcli dev wifi show-password" shows the Wi-Fi name and password.

And the content…

# cat Hotspot.nmconnection
[connection]
id=Hotspot
uuid=71ff483f-8bf7-4724-9993-2b4ab60cae0e
type=wifi
autoconnect=false
interface-name=wlp4s0f1u3

[wifi]
mode=ap
ssid=Hotspot-tiger

[wifi-security]
group=ccmp;
key-mgmt=wpa-psk
pairwise=ccmp;
proto=rsn;
psk=ZafkjMJUUnNq

[ipv4]
method=shared

[ipv6]
addr-gen-mode=default
method=ignore

[proxy]

And wireless connections from phone and laptop creates a working internet connection.

no success. Hotspot is online, but from client side the network is also unreachable

this was just a temporary problem - after reload module ath11k_pci its working again

I have a Thinkpad X13 with a Qualcomm QCNFA765 wifi and a Quectel EM05-G wwan module.

I can easily create a hotspot using the wifi and connect from my workstation via the TP-LINK wifi adapter using the hotspot created on the Thinkpad and access the internet via the laptop’s WWAN connection.

I have not been able to reproduce your issue in any way - on the contrary - which points to an issue local to your system.

I cannot make any conclusions as to why you are having the issue.

From the kernel version in your inxi, it seems you are using a kernel on stable branch

and your Wi-Fi network device is

It cannot be ruled out if it is related to Dell’s (or Rivet Networks) implementation of the Wi-Fi module and the kernel drivers for Qualcomm QCA6390 provided by the 7.2.3 kernel.

You could try compiling a custom kernel using the PKGBUILD available from Manjaro packages repo.

This is easily accomplished, with the benefit of being maintained as a separate package. Please see [How To] Compile a custom Manjaro kernel for more information.

EDIT
Just a quick thought - try disabling IPv6 on the hotspot…
