Wi-fi suddenly stops working after extended use

Hello, all. This is my first post.

I’m experiencing some trouble with getting the wi-fi to run on my latest install of Manjaro XFCE linux. I recently switched to a HP Omnidesk M020 running a Realtek RTL8852BE-VT PCIe 802.11ax. After install, the wi-fi simply didn’t work, which led me to install the AUR package rtw89-dkms-git after doing some web searching. This allowed the wi-fi to work, but not in full capacity.

Right now, the wi-fi will work for a while and randomly get cut-off entirely. Anything from locking my screen to video sharing with Zoom seems to contribute in triggering the problem. After the cut-off occurs, I try to reboot the NetworkManager.service, but it just shows some errors and won’t resume working correctly. Only rebooting the machine fixes the problem, but it makes using the computer feel like a disaster waiting to happen.

Here’s some info that may help in troubleshooting:

  • Kernel: 6.12.68-1 (LTS)

inxi -n:

Network:
  Device-1: Realtek RTL8852BE-VT PCIe 802.11ax Wireless Network
    driver: rtw89_8852bte
IF: wlp4s0 state: up mac: f8:3d:c6:f2:46:84
Device-2: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet
    driver: N/A

Here’s the output of some command that I ran after the wi-fi cut-off:

systemctl status NetworkManager:

Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be and some suggestions for a possible fix?

Mod edit: Corrected formatting.

Welcome to the Manjaro Commuity @PhotonSentinel! :vulcan_salute:

It may well help if you also provide your full inxi output, as is usually requested in Support threads:

inxi -zv8

Note: This output is privacy-filtered using the above command.

Also note: please use the code formatting (the </> button at the top of the Reply window or the three backticks ``` on lines above and below the pasted output), rather than the “quote” function, as this then formats it correctly for the Forum.

Unfortunately some WiFi cards are problematic in this way and the only option is to change it for a more compatible one, or use a USB dongle (or, preferably, if possible, a wired ethernet connection).

The wifi adapter may require a newer kernel, which might have the correct driver built-in.

Thank you for the welcome message. I’ll make to sure to use the correct formatting on my next posts.

Here’s the output for running the command inxi -zv8:

Apparently, the network driver switched from rtw89_8852bte to rtw89_8852bte_git overnight, which I’m not sure was caused by reinstalling some packages or not.

I see. I’ll also try running the latest system update to kernel 6.12.73-1 (LTS).

I mean a newer kernel branch, perhaps 6.18 if you want to stay on an LTS kernel.

If you want to check if the newer branch kernel comprises a working driver you need to uninstall the AUR driver.

Ah, I see. Understood. If the issue re-appears, these are the first measures I’ll try doing to troubleshoot it. Sadly, since it is not something exactly reproducible, there is no guaranteed way for me to test what works and what doesn’t. But, I’ll report back in a couple days with any updates.

Thank you for your suggestions and help!

Or, you could simply install kernel 6.18 (LTS) in any case, as (after looking at your inxi output) your system appears quite recent and will likely benefit from it, regardless.

Cheers.

Also try disabling any power management on that card.

sudo iw wlp4s0 set power_save off

Well, here’s a quick update: it’s been a week and the wi-fi has worked without any problems. I still don’t know what the issue was, but one of these suggestions must have solved it!

Thank you for helping me with this problem! I’m marking the problem resolved.
