Thousands and thousands of connections every single hour 24/7 are still going to add up to something.

First of all, for a connection you have to use TCP protocol, which ping isn’t. And second, you said:

so that’s 4800 pings per day * 64 bytes, gives you 300 KiB. So that’s 9 megabytes per month. Make it twice as much for both directions. I can see this being a problem if you are sitting on a Voyager I pinging Earth.

Wait til you find out how much DNS uses. Should probably only use IPs or just make every entry static.
