Hi everyone! I have a Dell Latitude E7470 laptop running Manjaro. I noticed in the last week or two that I can no longer charge my phone from the laptop or connect to the USB port for more than about 3 seconds. Before, I could charge the phone and I could transfer pictures and files from the phone to my laptop just fine. Just to be sure, I plugged in a voltmeter/ampmeter to my USB port and it shows about 5V and 1.5 Amps when I plug the phone in. But after about 3 seconds, the current drops to zero. I also cannot see the phone show up in the Thunar file mgr. Before, it would pop up after a couple of seconds and I could start transferring files.
Hi @Zachrey, and welcome!
I’m afraid to say it sounds like a hardware problem, either the phone or the USB port. Test the phone on another PC, if it works, test with another phone on your PC/the USB port in question.
Also try charging it by plugging it into the wall or your car.
Wow! Thank you for the fast replies!!
I forgot to mention that phone charges up just fine with a wall wart supply. But I’ll try connecting to a Win7 laptop and see if the phone will connect…
Yep! It is transferring files now to the Win7 laptop! I also know that the USB port on the Manjaro laptop is OK since I can flash firmware onto Meshtastic LoRa radios. I see there are some updates available on the Pamac GUI. So I’ll try those and maybe try the latest stable kernel??
OK just updated Manjaro 11:15, 12/4/2024 and it is NOT charging but it IS recognizing the device in Thunar!! Oh and now it is charging, too! Must’ve been some kind of bug that got corrected in the lastest update??
I doubt it. But maybe it was a dirty connection…I’ve heard of that before.
OK I think I understand this better. If you open Thunar and THEN plug in your android phone into the USB port of Dell Latitude E7470 laptop, then the phone shows up in Thunar. But if you do not engage the phone in Thunar, by single left clicking on “Android Phone” in the Places panel of Thunar, the phone does NOT charge!! You have to single left click on the phone in Thunar. ONLY then will it start charging!
