White horizontal lines flickering when screen comes out of sleep

When the OS puts my screen to sleep, it starts flickering with horizontal white lines occasionally mainly on the login screen, when switching application using alt + tab, in game menus etc. (I suspect when GPU clocks increase)

I’ve been having this since installation using the Manjaro + KDE plasma installer. (6 weeks ago)
I have reinstalled the open source amdgpu drivers but that made no difference.
I can stop the flickering when I set the refresh rate to 60Hz and back to 165Hz in plasma!

Another issue that might be related: When I put the PC to sleep my GPU starts going full throttle and consumes 400W, when I let plasma put the PC to sleep using the timer this issue does not occur. I checked my BIOS for this one and reset it to defaults but no success.

My specs: GPU: [ASRock AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Taichi 24GB OC] amdgpu open source drivers.
Mobo: [ASRock X670E Taichi]
CPU: [AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Boxed]
Display: [Iiyama G-Master GB3467WQSU-B5 Zwart] 165Hz, 3440x1440, Displayport 1.4

Welcome to the Manjaro community @lsxy

Please provide the output of:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8
Running `inxi` in `chroot`
Providing `inxi` when you cannot access your desktop environment

Any code or command output (such as inxi output) should be placed within a scrollable pre-formatted text enclosure according to forum guidelines.

See here for instructions :point_down:

[Mini How-To] format code or command output

Select and copy all the text in the Terminal window (minus the prompt, if you are using zsh).

Then paste the output in between two lines containing three backticks:
```
or three tildes:
~~~

Or:

Copy & paste, then highlight the pasted text and click the </> button at the top of the reply window (easier for smaller outputs).

Regarding your reinstalling of amdgpu drivers:

AMD GPU drivers are included in the kernel, so you probably don’t need to install any special amdgpu packages. Could you please provide the name of the AMD GPU package that you reinstalled?

Also, a list of all AMD packages that are installed on your system might be helpful - please provide the output of the following command:

pamac search -i amd

Hi Scotty, thanks for the rapid reply, I don’t remember exactly. I think I just checked the amdgpu package and tried to reinstall ‘linux-firmware-amdgpu’ using pacman. Either way I dont think I changed the system doing it.

Commands and output:

Are you using a multiple monitor configuration?

This should of course have been disclosed in your first post, along with any other information that might have been relevant, however, if you are using multiple monitors, does this issue go away when both are set to the same mutually supported refresh rate?

Nope a single widescreen monitor, as stated and can be seen in the inxi output:

Monitor-1: DP-1 model: Idek Iiyama PL3467WQ serial: <filter> built: 2022
    res: mode: 3440x1440 hz: 165 scale: 100%

Connected via DP on the 7900XTX ofc :blush:

Then the possible resolution I had in mind is not relevant.

The question still needed to be asked for the sake of ruling it out.

It’s not uncommon for inxi output to not be representative of hardware in use when an issue is exposed; a monitor may have been temporarily disconnected at the time, for example.

An obvious workaround is to use the 60Hz refresh rate instead.

Sometimes the honourable cable can be the weak link – I assume you have tried swapping out the cable, and trying other Display Ports. Avoid using adapter cables, where possible.

I’ll chime in again if I think of anything else.

Regards.

One thing I would isolate is VRR/Adaptive Sync. In Plasma, try disabling Adaptive Sync for that display, then log out/in and test the wake path again at 165 Hz. Flicker that disappears after switching refresh rates can be a modeset/VRR state issue, not a missing driver.

Also, while testing I would remove most of the amdgpu/power kernel parameters and keep notes of one change at a time. With a 7900 XTX, current mesa/linux-firmware/kernel are usually the important parts; too many workaround parameters can make suspend/display power behaviour harder to reason about.

That’s interesting. I’m not sure if it is the reason why the issue is occurring, but it might be worth testing if the issue occurs with a newer kernel, such as linux70 or linux71. As the amdgpu driver is included in the kernel, a kernel change often resolves display issues.

If you run the following command in a terminal, it will open the Manjaro Settings Manager GUI showing all kernels which are available for installation on your system:

manjaro-settings-manager -m msm_kernel

In the CLI, you can list available kernels with:

mhwd-kernel -l

Installed kernels can be viewed with:

mhwd-kernel -li

To install a kernel:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i <kernel-name>

For example:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux70

To view all mhwd-kernel options:

mhwd-kernel --help

I tried with linux kernel 71 but I have the issue still. Again setting the refresh rate to 60Hz and reverting in the plasma display menu solved the white horizontal lines flickering when I alt-tab etc.

❯ mhwd-kernel -li
Currently running: 7.1.0-rc5-1-MANJARO (linux71)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux618
   * linux71

I tried to record my monitor with obs to see if the lines are visible that way but they don’t show up on video. I could make a recording with my phone if you want to see what it looks like?
