Whenever I restart my display manager or reboot, my right display's output is black except for my cursor

Logs you could look up:

journalctl -b -0
ls /var/log/lightdm
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

Isnā€™t that specific to Windows only?

Anyway, since you use XFCE, just check or remove the file:
~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml

It will regenerate after reboot.

Iā€™ve checked the BIOS settings, and there is indeed no way to disable the Intel integrated GPU from there.

The closest setting I could find was the Primary Display setting, with options Auto, Intel HD Graphics, and NVIDIA HD Graphics, and this description:

This field determines which video controller will become the primary display when multiple controllers are available in the system.
If you select a device other than what you are currently using, you will have to reconnect your video cable to your selected device.

NOTE: When Auto is not selected, the onboard graphics device will be present and enabled.

The last part sounds like it might do it, but that doesnā€™t seem to be the case. When ā€œAutoā€ is selected, the onboard graphics is present and enabled too. The note is just informing us that the iGPU doesnā€™t get disabled by selecting the dGPU. Edit: Iā€™m not sure why some words are bolded in the monospace text block above. I didnā€™t do that in markdown.

I have these now. I tried to post their output all in this, but got Body is limited to 150000 characters; you entered 324088. from the forum software. I realized that some of it shows exactly what software Iā€™m running that may not be related, so decided to avoid posting it all for now. If I can trim these to exactly what we need to see, I can post them. Iā€™ll browse them now.

OK, Iā€™ll try that. That sounds promising.

No. Hereā€™s an ubuntu wiki article about it: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntelQuickSyncVideo

Aha! I see something in here.

It seems somehow ā€œanother vendorā€ is getting the display first.

Doing this made my primary display appear on startup! Thatā€™s much better than a black screen! However, itā€™s laggy, and I can tell just by dragging a window around.

Iā€™m not 100% sure about the log entries I read above, but it seems from them (especially GLX: Another vendor is already registered for screen 0) that the Intel GPU is somehow registering my primary display for GLX early or something. Iā€™ll look at the LightDM logs.

Maybe make both your ports use the ForceCompositionPipeline=On or none use that. Might be better. Also, make sure your config is not missing this last lines:

You can also safely use the Option "ConnectToAcpid" "Off" in Device Section.

Thank you for those tweaks, but Iā€™m not really interested in optimizing right now. My setup is exactly how I want it after using ā€œApplyā€ in the nvidia-settings tool. For now, I just want to make sure Iā€™m using the right GPU for both my displays on startup without having to use the workaround. I will look into those tweaks later though, once Iā€™ve determined that Iā€™m using the right GPU after the display manager has initialized, without using ā€œApplyā€ in the nvidia-settings tool.

If I can figure out how to set which GPU is truly in use on the display managerā€™s startup, then the issue will be solved.

Not sure what you mean. If the monitors are connected to the dGPU aka Nvidia, and the monitors are showing the desktop, then that is what your system is using.
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL"
will show you that too

Another test with sudo systemctl restart display-manager, waiting a short while (a few extra seconds), dragging windows around, and checking vsynctester.com in Chromium (not Firefox because Firefox has a vsync issue in Linux as it targets exactly 60 Hz and canā€™t be set to my displayā€™s refresh rate of 59.95 Hz) revealed that I have perfect vsync right after initialization, so the problem does indeed seem to be solved!

Thanks for all your help! The big issue from my first post is resolved, and Iā€™ve marked the post that solved it as the solution.

In the end, the solution to my black screen issue was to delete ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml and seemingly it had nothing to do with the internal GPU after all.

Regarding optimization, I have exactly the tweaks I want. I have perfect vsync with software that synchronizes properly (Chromium only, seemingly; Firefox still has vsync bugs), and the input lag is as minimal as I could get it. The input lag seems like itā€™s 1 frame (as low as it can get) except when the CPU is in heavy use, because it seems to not do as much rendering on the GPU as Windows.

I tried enabling this composite extension and it did nothing discernable. My terminal is still semi-transparent as it already was with XFWM composition enabled. I also researched it on https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/450.66/README/xcompositeextension.html and read that it also adds a whole lot of configuration complexity that Iā€™d rather not bother with, including many possible issues, so it seems safest to avoid it for now.

For those curious about the XFCE setup Iā€™m using for perfect vsync on my main monitor with Nvidia, Iā€™m using:

  • In xfconf xfwm:
    ** vblank_mode off
    ** sync_to_vblank false
** use_compositing true (not using compton or picom because I found them to be buggy)
  • In nvidia-settings (aka ā€œNvidia X Server Settingsā€):
** ā€œForce Composition Pipelineā€ enabled on only my main display where I care about synchronization, because my displays have different refresh rates and enabling it on both messes up one of them
** ā€œForce Full Composition Pipelineā€ disabled because I saw some weird scaling issues with it, and its description sounds like it only affects scaling anyway

I donā€™t need other tweaks since it seems perfect now. Iā€™ve validated it in vsynctester.com with Chromium and seen it show that ā€œVSYNCā€ text in grey blinking perfectly for more than a few minutes without a single frame drop or red spike. Thatā€™s as good as it can get. I hope Firefox catches up with Chromiumā€™s vsync in Linux soon. I use Firefox as my main browser for multiple reasons.
