I’m brand new to Manjaro, and I’m trying to read up on any telemetry, et cetera I may want to disable. MDD was discussed in 2024 - whatever became of the MDD concept and implementation? Has it been scrapped, or evolved since then? pamac doesn’t list mdd as a package.
It has been put on a long hold for now, for various reasons, among which the controversy regarding the telemetry itself, as well as the fact that the output from the mdd script could be — and was effectively — modified into sending false information to the server.
That is strange, because it’s still in the repository (), and it also still shows up in octopi at my end.
But either way, the page on the server that processed the data from those who were running the script has been taken offline, so even if you were to install and run the script, it wouldn’t make any difference.
Thank you for that detailed response! I’m glad to hear that it was scrapped - I would love to see Manjaro position itself as some combination of user-friendly AND privacy-preserving. I am aware of the arguments around MDD preserving privacy, but the optics are still bad.
I haven’t tried to install it, I just asked pamac to list all installed.
Oh, but it was never installed by default. It was only an experiment.
One had to install it oneself through the package manager, and even then it would still need to be run manually. I myself had it running once every day by way of a systemd timer, but most people never bothered to set it up like that, and instead only ran it manually once or twice.
Well, it didn’t reveal anything personal. It only sent some information about your CPU type, your country of residence, your GPU type and your filesystem choice to the server. Besides, in a multi-user system, gathering information about the individual user accounts would be pointless anyway.
This is a disturbing comment - and reveals that the whole world is getting extremely paranoid with no good reason…
There was nothing about privacy to worry about, but people are just over-reacting possibly because one person put the word ‘telemetry’ in a post and then everyone equated that with Microsoft.
Just like inxi -zv8 you can give system information without any privacy issues…
Just imagine designing cars for ‘disabled people’ but you’re not allowed to know how they drive, or what disabilities they have? This is blind development…
Manjaro is, and was even when MDD was installed (by the user, I might add).
Not only was it entirely voluntary, but it revealed NO personal information about the user, far less, in fact, than your web browser reveals on a regular basis.
