I’m running kernel 6.12 at the moment. I hesitate to install 6.15, because it’s not a LTS (even when it’s stable). Where can I find information when the next LTS kernel will be released?
You can check The Linux Kernel Archives - Releases but as the next LTS is not yet decided your guess is as good or bad as mine.
Thanks a lot. As there is nearly every end of year a release, I expect a new kernel within the next 4-5 month.
There is a long tradition standing (LTS) (pun intended) where the last kernel of a year has been chosen as LTS - but as can be deduced this is not set in stone nor is it always so.
Many Linux distributions provide their own “longterm maintenance” kernels that may or may not be based on those maintained by kernel developers. These kernel releases are not hosted at kernel.org and kernel developers can provide no support for them.
If one could do a prediction - based on current mainline 6.16 only has a few cycles left before becoming stable - and development shift to 6.17 and after 9-10 weeks 6.18 which theoretically is close to the last kernel of the year.
But anything can happen… based on release schedules, the number of weeks in a year; my guess would be either 6.17 or 6.18.
internal politics; (added to list).
I’m curious why…
I always keep the LTS, but always install the newest current version, then switch back if there’s any issue and wait for the next one.
It’s fine to have two installed.
Having two (or more) kernels installed is a great way to avoid the possibility of not being able to boot into the OS, when a kernel issue arises; one can always use another installed kernel.
With many Linux distributions this simply isn’t possible.
