What is the best way to get GPU hardware acceleration to use for example in OBS?

I have ignored this topic for a relatively long time, but now I finally want to make sure that my AMD GPUs (both in my Z16 AMD ThinkPad and in my AMD Ryzen 9 3900X desktop system) can be used properly. For example, I would like to record with OBS via my GPUs.

Unfortunately, despite reading quite a few threads and Manjaro as well as Arch Wiki pages, I am still unsure which way I need to go:

  1. Compile MESA with proprietary codecs
  2. Install the nonfree AMD GPU driver

Interestingly, sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300 says on my laptop:

amdgpu driver is the preferred driver on AMD systems. It’s contributed by AMD directly and will hardware accelerate whatever tasks capable of utilizing the GPU. The nonfree driver isn’t any faster in general, and certainly not in gaming, it’s geared more towards professional 3D workload (building, not playing) with enhanced OpenCL and other supporting features.

Re-run the auto configuration wizard to ensure it selects your GPU as encoder. Otherwise, go to File->Settings->Output and choose the corresponding Video Encoder which should be prefixed by “Hardware” (inside the brackets can be anything, but may or may not matter depending on your use case). Lastly, nvtop (I know it’s weird, but it really works) can tell which process is utilizing which GPU, so if you run OBS, then nvtop, and OBS is listed there when you record/stream with usage percentage on a high value, be sure it’s using the GPU.
