What is going on here every hour?

As to be seen in sreenshot, something creates an empty folder every hour.

Pamac updates every 6 hours !

Did not look into journalctl at the moment … will do that later!

journalctl tells me:

[john1@manjaro ~]$ journalctl|grep -i  08:58

.. but that explains nothing for me !

Any ideas ?

In preferences of pamac there is an option to download updates automatically. Do you have it on? I don’t know if it has something to do with that but try to turn it off.

There is a systemd unit archlinux-keyring-wkd-sync.timer which will update Arch Linux keyring from time to time.

 $ cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/archlinux-keyring-wkd-sync.timer
[Unit]
Description=Refresh existing PGP keys of archlinux-keyring regularly

[Timer]
OnCalendar=weekly
Persistent=true
RandomizedDelaySec=1week

As for the folders in /var/cache/pacman/pkg it is a known issue

.. turned it off … we’ll see !

If it is not archlinux-keyring-wkd-sync.timer it could be pamac-daemon.service from libpamac

$ cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/pamac-daemon.service
[Unit]
Description=Pamac Daemon

[Service]
Type=dbus
BusName=org.manjaro.pamac.daemon
ExecStart=/usr/bin/pamac-daemon
$ cat /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.manjaro.pamac.daemon.service
[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.manjaro.pamac.daemon
Exec=/usr/bin/pamac-daemon
User=root
SystemdService=pamac-daemon.service

Last comment on Gitlab is 14 hours ago. I see these empty folders since january 2026.

To me it seems like those services (keyring or pamac update) fail because of a bad wifi signal or drop and reschedule and try to run after an hour.

Those folders are the typical pamac/pacman temporary download folders. And there is a bug and they are not always cleaned after, but the temp files in them are cleaned. So it’s generally normal except the frequency with wich they appear in you case. As said, probably interrupted update.
You can see in the log - wifi dis-reconnects and that trigger the update.

Your explanation is logic for my understanding , i’ll mark it tomorrow as solution, just to see what will happen tonight . When i look at an ongoing update i remember that gpg updates for example take usually lots of time .

I have a systemd-timer that “rm -rf /var/cache/pacman/pkg/download-*” every night and also cleans the cached directory.

Edit: one day later …

No new issues so i mark @Teo explanation as solution
