What happened to the RSS updates notifications that was in the taskbar years ago?

Hey!

If I recall correctly, Manjaro KDE version used to have a notification icon in the system tray where it always notices about the last updates for Manjaro. Like 5 years ago, more or less.
I’ve used to love that. Anyways, thank you. It’s a good distro.

If you mean matray - GitHub - moson-mo/matray: A Manjaro Linux announcements notification app - the project is abandoned and will soon be removed from the repos.
Anyway, it is not something you really really need. There are at least 2 alternatives:

  1. pamac-tray (the shield icon near the clock) tells you if there is update, there is also a popup. When you click on it it opens pamac-gui. If there are many packages listed, this is then obviously the big monthly update, so before updating you can and should check the Announcements for known problems and solutions.
  2. RSS from the forum is still available, if you use it with whatever client (like Liferea)
Just add .rss in the category url. For example
https://forum.manjaro.org/c/announcements/11.rss

is the general category or

https://forum.manjaro.org/c/announcements/stable-updates/12.rss

are only the stable updates.

Adding to @teo’s post, you can also have the forum notify you when a new update announcement topic is created for your branch.

For example, to be notified of a Stable update, go to the Latest Announcements/Stable Updates topics - Manjaro Linux Forum page and click on the notification bell at the top. Select the “Watching First Post” option to be notified whenever a new topic is created:

I’ve done that with Testing branch, and here’s the most recent email the forum sent me when an update was announced a couple of days ago:

Thank you Scotty, i have not noticed that bell button in the categories, i thought one can only subscribe to topics. This email notification is also very nice.

Hey guys, thank you both for your answers. Thank you so much. It’s wonderful to see many ways to implement alternatives to this. I feel grateful for your answers.
