Webcam turning on but showing black screen

In multiple applications, the webcam is turned on (My laptop has a camera light that turns on) but I’m only shown a blank black screen. This is the same behavior when on zoom or trying the camera on any other application. This is weird for me because on my old install before one of the updates bricked me and had to reinstall it was working. It would just take a second or two before the image shows up.

What I’ve tried so far:

Camera shows its on by turning on the light but nothing shows.

I’ve tried switching to kernel 5.4 as that was what was on my old install but that didn’t change a thing.

What happens when you try cheese or Kamora to operate the webcam?
Also is there any type of covering over the lens?
Have you went into your browser or system settings and gave permission for the camera to be used?

It looks like the camera is being seen, but doesn’t have permission to be used. I had this problem, when into firefox settings and gave it permission to be used and then I could see myself and could be used on zoom.

I get a black screen when I open cheese. All the buttons are greyed out but my camera laptop light shows its on.

The camera doesn’t have a screen cover and I tried looking for camera settings in KDE system settings but there isn’t anything like that. I don’t think It’s an permission issue because I don’t use zoom or discord from FireFox, I have the packages installed and use those. If there are some permissions to be changed somewhere in the system It would be great if someone could point me to it.

Sounds like a hardware error.

Can you do a:

journalctl --boot=0 | grep --ignore-case webcam

which will give you something like this:

I booted into windows 10 since I dual boot and it seems that it isn’t working there either. I think the camera has somehow died. Thank You for all the help.

Edit: I forgot to add that updating this bios didn’t change anything. Which is why I think the camera is somehow dead.

A shot in the dark probably, but have you tried Webcamoid? It might be possible to get an image by changing the settings, although if Cheese doesn’t pick it up it’s probably a lost cause unfortunately.

Also might be worth a look at the output of lsusb -v :slight_smile:
