Webcam not detected after update

Ok looks like I’m yet another Manjaro user facing this issue :sleepy:
My laptop webcam does not get detected after the latest update. I’ve tried rebooting couple of times, not help.
Here are some outputs of the commands I used:

sudo rmmod uvcvideo && sudo modprobe uvcvideo
I got no errors and no output, but still can’t see my webcam.

Result of v4l2-ctl --list-devices gives:
Cannot open device /dev/video0, exiting.

I even ran sudo dmesg | grep usb

I have gone through similiar threads on the forum, nothing seems to provide a fix for my situation.

Desperately looking forward for some help from you guys! :worried:

try different kernel, for example: linux 5.15.32-1

but shouldn’t I keep updating my kernel?
In my system, I have:

Currently running: 5.17.1-3-MANJARO (linux517)
The following kernels are installed in your system:

  • linux419
  • linux510
  • linux514
  • linux515
  • linux516
  • linux517
  • linux54

why the hell do you have so many kernels installed haha… uninstall the following: linux419, linux514(its EOL), linux54… and boot into your 5.15 and check if your webcam works…

If you reload the uvcvideo again, does it makes a difference?

sudo rmmod uvcvideo
sudo modprobe uvcvideo

I have the same issue with 5.15 but in 5.10, works fine

hi, I ran these 2 commands,
Unfortunately they don’t make a difference
Is there any other solution apart from booting into an older kernel?

I removed 419, 54 and 514 as you suggested.
I also tried booting into 510 and 515, still no luck.
Camera is not being detected in the previous kernel versions as well now

Is not the first time that webcam support just disappeared. :sob:

After a few reboots it was fixed in 5.15

I must have booted with 5.15 about 4-7 times now… still no change
is there no actual fix in the latest kernel?

maybe try booting into an really old kernel, for example the 4.19 and see… if it still doesnt work, try booting for example into linux mint live usb, and check if it works there, to see if its only an arch issue or a linux issue

how to go about getting a linux mint live usb?

download linux mint iso from here and use Ventoy to flash it on USB, then boot from the usb into Mints live session and check

thank you!
will try this
meanwhile, I’d really appreciate it if anyone can suggest more directions to actually fix the issue :grinning:

and what is the exact name/model of your webcam?

I have not been able to find the exact model of my webcam.
This is my laptop though :
acer Predator Helios 300 Core i5 8th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/128 GB SSD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics/NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti) PH315-51 / PH315-51-51V7/ph315 51 55xx Gaming Laptop Rs.99999 Price in India - Buy acer Predator Helios 300 Core i5 8th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/128 GB SSD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics/NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti) PH315-51 / PH315-51-51V7/ph315 51 55xx Gaming Laptop Obsidian Black Online - acer : Flipkart.com

ran a few commands again:

@bogdancovaciu

And this is what appears when I open Cheese:

Still no fix here :frowning:
@brahma @bogdancovaciu sometimes in between the camera would randomly work, but most times it goes undetected.
Even after my latest kernel update

You can use most competible webcam for Windows 11 laptops to avoid issues like this.
