Why do open source OSes & apps not all use GTK (QT is not open source right). Wyt did they start Waylabd, ibstead of building onto X11 & renaming it to x12?
Because gtk
is highly restrictive, and its developers are not amenable to user feedback.
It is essentially being developed by more or less the same people as who develop GNOME, and with the same hostile attitude.
And, in my personal opinion, it sucks.
Yes it is. It has a dual license — one open/free and one proprietary.
Because Wayland is an entirely different design. It works completely differently, and more efficiently.
The KDE Free Qt Foundation has the purpose of securing the availability of the Qt toolkit
- for the development of Free Software and
- in particular for the development of KDE software.
It is a Norwegian foundation (stiftelse).
The Foundation has license agreements with Qt Group, Digia and Nokia. The agreements ensure that the Qt will continue to be available as Free Software. Should Qt Group discontinue the development of the Qt Free Edition under the required licenses, then the Foundation has the right to release Qt under a BSD-style license or under other open source licenses. The agreements stay valid in case of a buy-out, a merger or bankruptcy.
