Wayland/Plasma – AMDGPU display artifacts and DRM spam with dual-monitor setup (RX 5500 XT)

Hello,

I’m experiencing recurring display artifacts and kernel spam on my Manjaro system. I’d like to report the issue and provide as much information as possible. This issue has been present for quite some time, but in light of the last update and the invitation in the related stable update post to report things that aren’t in order, I thought it’s the good time to report it.

Problem description

  • On my primary monitor (4K, landscape, scaling at 140%), I sometimes see horizontal lines/artefacts at the bottom of the screen.
  • These lines do not disappear after a reboot once they appear.
  • They are not always present, but when they are, they persist.
  • I’m running Wayland (Plasma/KWin) and would like to stay on Wayland, though I can test X11 if requested.
  • At some point during the information gathering for this post, the artifacts disappeared without obvious cause (possibly after running diagnostic commands, though I cannot confirm a link).

Display setup

  • Primary monitor: 4K, landscape mode, scaled at 140%, 144 Hz
  • Secondary monitor: HD, portrait mode, scaled at 100%, 60 Hz

I don’t know if the combination of resolution + orientation + scaling + refresh rate contributes to the issue, but it could be relevant.

System information

Kernel:

Linux 6.16.8-1-MANJARO #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri, 19 Sep 2025 x86_64 GNU/Linux

GPU (OpenGL):

OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (radeonsi, navi14, LLVM 20.1.8, DRM 3.64, 6.16.8-1-MANJARO)

GPU (Vulkan):

GPU id = 0 (AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (RADV NAVI14))

DRM info:

modetest from libdrm 2.4.124
/dev/dri/card0
  Driver: amdgpu 3.64.0 20240910

Relevant logs

Kernel (repeated spam):

amdgpu 0000:0d:00.0: [drm] Mode Validation Warning: Validation OK failed validation.

It appears multiple times per second. journalctl is full of this line repeating itself.

KWin/Plasma errors:

kwin_wayland[1119]: kwin_wayland_drm: atomic commit failed: Permission denied
kwin_wayland[1119]: kwin_core: Applying output config failed!
kwin_wayland[1119]: kwin_screencast: PipeWire remote error: connection error
kwin_wayland_wrapper[...] mesa egl surface queue destroyed while proxies still attached

Other QML/Plasma warnings (examples):

plasmashell[1234]: file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.digitalclock/contents/ui/main.qml:45:5: QML Text: Binding loop detected for property "height"
plasmashell[1234]: file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.kickoff/contents/ui/KickoffGridView.qml:56:17: Unable to assign [undefined] to double

Additional tests

  • I installed Weston for testing. Running weston starts a session without any such kernel spam or display issues.
    Example Weston log:

GL renderer: AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (radeonsi, navi14, LLVM 20.1.8, DRM 3.64, 6.16.8-1-MANJARO)
    Output 'wayland0' enabled with head(s) wayland0

→ No artifacts or DRM spam observed.

Notes

  • The artifacts are intermittent, but when they appear, they can persist across reboots (restart).
  • The kernel spam is constant while Plasma Wayland is running.
  • I am available to provide further logs or to test with X11 if needed, although I prefer to remain on Wayland.

Question:
Is this a known issue with KWin/Wayland + AMDGPU (multi-monitor, mixed orientation)?
What further tests or logs would help narrow it down?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

As usual, please provide

inxi -zv8

Also, please provide information how exactly you connect the two displays (from a hardware point of view).

Try to switch to testing branch to see if kwin 6.4.5 is fixing the issue. Else you can also try 6.12 LTS kernel.

@Wollie - Sorry, I read too fast. The primary monitor is connected through a display port cable (version 1.4 DSC, says the screen) ; the secondary monitor is connected through an HDMI cable.

@philm - I’ll try the testing branch, and I’ll come back to you here to give feedback.

I’m now on the testing branch, and I went for the latest (experimental) kernel, and it seems that the message

kernel: amdgpu 0000:0d:00.0: [drm] Mode Validation Warning: Validation OK failed validation.

has disapeared.

For the display artefacts, for now they aren’t there, but since they apeared randomly, I’ll have to test it out for a few days to see if they come back - I’ll report on it.

Here are the logs I have for now :

sudo dmesg -w | grep -i amdgpu  1|1 ✘

This is not exactly 6.12 LTS kernel as recommended…

Philm wrote “else”, implying options. I went for the Testing branch option, and while I was at it, since the testing branch is probably tested with the latest kernel available, I opted to go for it too.

There are users here with all kind of kernels in testing branch, but very likely not many using a release canditate. If it’s working for you - fine. :innocent:

Oh I see! I assumed the contratry. Well, for now it works ; if something fails, I’ll report on it - and probably change kernel again.

I’ve been running the linux617 release candidate on my AMD Ryzen 5800H machine ever since 6.17.0rc1-1 arrived in the Testing repo on the 12th of August. I did have some issues with the 6.17.0rc0 kernels and went back to linux616 for a few days, but there have been no issues from 6.17.0rc1 onward.

Of course, I do also have linux616 & linux612 (LTS) installed which I can reboot into if I encounter an issue with a release candidate.

The artifacts are there again.

It happens when the computer is left to itself for some time and the screens get turned off. Once the computer is solicited again, the display artifacts appear.
This time, strangely, I can read ‘virtual keyboard’ in the artifacts, which may be a clue on how it happens.
Below, the part of the output of journalctl --user -b0 | grep -E "kwin|plasmashell" that corresponds to when the computer was solicited again.

Perhaps interestingly, the artifacts are not stable - in the time I took to gather information and to write this, it has evolved to this :

For all that may be interested, I think I finally figured the display artifacts. They are probably hardware specific to my LG 27GN950 display. When displaying through Display Port version 1.4 it allows 120Hz refresh rate. Supposedly, it supports 144hz if Display Port 1.4 (DSC) is selected in the OSD.

Initially, this problem wasn’t there, but it is now. The hardware can’t handle that, its performance degrades over time, which is good to know.

I knew there was a microcode update for that display that allowed to have a 155hz refresh rate, but to apply it, the ONLY way is to have a Windows OS to use a LG program that manages that update.
Last week, since I had this artifact problem anyway, I finally decided to install Windows JUST FOR THAT - Windows stupidly crushed my EFI partition and wrecked my GRUB, as usual - and I managed to get it done.

I selected that new option in the OSD to have it go to 155Hz, and, lo and behold, the artifacts were way, way worse. At this point, the only refresh rate it really does correctly it seems is 120Hz, with Display Port 1.4 - no DSC. I checked with another GPU, and it really is this screen. bad luck for me!

TL;DR - it is the monitor’s hardware and/or microcode that is to blame.
