VMware Network Editor (vmware-netcfg) GUI doesn't Load

Hello!

I recently installed Manjaro Plasma over Manjaro XFCE entirely (reformatted). I really liked KDE on the Steam Deck and went for a fresh start.

Anyway, for the life of me, I can’t find out why vmware-netcfg’s GUI wont load. From CLI with “sudo vmware-netcfg” or from the app menu, nothing shows. I can see the process in htop, but without any errors to go off of I’m at a loss. Looking at the logs in /var/logs/vmware didn’t help me much either.

Any pointers on where to look or what to try next would be greatly appreciated. The issue persists on both my laptop and desktop, both Manjaro Plasma now.

Additional Context:

  • VMware Workstation is from AUR, same as the former install.
  • Currently using X11.
  • I enabled the services call out in the Wiki, no issues there once the network config was generated (/etc/vmware/networking).
  • VM networking via NAT works great. Just can’t setup a new bridged interfaces.
  • Looking at Manjaro’s and Arch’s wiki I wasn’t able to conclude if I missed something this time around.
  • Installed XFCE in an attempt to get it working there without success.

Ah, man. I just realized I posted this in the wrong sub and should’ve been in the AUR category. That’s on me and my flu infected brain right now.

EDIT: I moved it. Very cool.

VMWare is proprietary and doesn’t always work on rolling release distros like Manjaro. I highly suggest using a libvirt frontend like virt-manager or GNOME Boxes. VirtualBox is decent as well. Less issues, less headaches and better performance.

Thanks for the advice. I see there are a few solutions to converting my VMs to VBox. You got me thinking I could try an older kernel also.

Appreciate it, Yochanan.

I found a work around. I feel it should’ve been obvious, but vmware-netcfg seems to load just fine in any kernel prior to linux69 at the moment. I was able make the changes I needed and boot back into 6.9.

I shall remember this when troubleshooting in the future. May this help others. Thanks again.
