VLC (official) does not open network streams

Hello team,
My VLC (official repository extra, 3.0.18-6) does not open a network stream,
whilst VLC (flatpak, 3.0.18) plays the same network stream without problems.

I performed re-install, however it did not have any effect.
I am unable to uninstall that VLC due to error: could not satisfy dependency: removing vlc breaks dependency vlc required by elisa.

Questions:

  1. What is the difference between those two VLC players ?
  2. Why the official VLC can no play a network stream, whilst flatpak VLC plays the network stream ?
  3. I need only one, working VLC. How to get rid of the official VLC ?

I have never heard of elisa so I checked and it’s in the extra repository:

However, for the network streams I have no idea. Open VLC in the terminal, try to open the stream and see if and which errors appear in the terminal. That should help diagnose the problem.

If I compare vlc -l | grep ts of flatpak and official version, then I can see, the flatpak version (which is playing the stream well) has got ts MPEG Transport Stream demuxer

However I dont know, how to install it also for official VLC. Can you advise ?

Summary:
Official VLC can not Play ts strems, whilst flatpak VLC can play without problems.

  1. compare modules of both VLC
    vlc -l | grep ts vs flatpak run org.videolan.VLC -l | grep ts
    This will give you a hint, what modules are missing.

  2. Install the missing modules.
    In my case it was module ts MPEG Transport Stream demuxer. As per Internet, the TS module is in fact aribb24 and can be easily installed from Manjaro’s Add/remove Software.
    Another good command is pamac search aribb24 as suggested by Mirdarthos

After installation of aribb24, official VLC plays TS streams. Hurra.

Thank you. I got it. Simultaneously with you, I found couple of online articles about similar issues, where aribb24 was missing and installation helped. It seems, problem is known couple of years :frowning:

aribb24 is listed as an optional dependency of vlc.

Always check optional dependencies of a program if something isn’t working as expected. vlc has many.

Run pacman -Qi vlc and review the Optional Deps. It will show which are installed. As @cscs mentioned, aribb24 is one of them. :wink:
