Where is it in Manajaro, I looked in 2 places google told me, no luck. It says it can’t open a youtube addy & says check log for more details.
The first answer here should cover it:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/910037/where-is-the-vlc-logfile-for-errors
Tools → Preferences → way down at the bottom: select the “all” checkbox
top left then is: Advanced - and below that: Logger
check: log to file - give it a name and location or choose an already existing file …
Starting vlc
from a terminal rather than via the menu could also give some helpful output in that terminal - I don’t know.
It looks like you first need to create the file - and then select it and save …
for (your) example:
touch ~/vlc/vlc.log
select this now existing file as your log file from within the vlc
settings - and save
… this is the first time I have used the program and this procedure worked for me - there is something in that log file after I started the program and played a clip I had locally
Here is what I got.
– logger module started –
main: Running vlc with the default interface. Use ‘cvlc’ to use vlc without interface.
main: playlist is empty
lua error: Couldn’t descramble YouTube throttling URL parameter: data transfer will get throttled
access error: HTTP 403 error
– logger module stopped –
The HTTP
403 Forbidden
client error response status code indicates that the server understood the request but refused to process it.
… something within the URL that was given to VLC, apparently
I have no idea what that means in this context.
It plays fine on youtube in Mozilla…
something within the URL that was given to VLC, apparently
I copy & pasted right from Mozilla, strange.
Isn’t there a firefox extension to automate this process?
… yes, there is - several even
for example:
Open in VLC media player – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)
cave:
I don’t use them - I sometimes use clipgrab
to download a video to have a local copy which I can watch and share and keep for all eternity
I have it, not sure how to use it. I read the info abiut the addon. =Is this the right vid. to watch for instructions?
I linked you to two different extensions - which one of them do you have?
There likely are even more - these where just the two first that I was presented with when I was searching.
I’m willing to test and see whether and how it works and then tell you …
Or where you referring to what I mentioned: clipgrab
?
That’s not a Firefox extension but a separate program.
Vlc Online - multimedia player., I click it get a box that says open VLC, but it doesn’t open it.
This one?:
VLC online - multimedia player – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)
Have you ever successfully used it?
Or is it just one video where it doesn’t seem to work?
I have not installed it yet - just searched for it and read the description,
which says:
VLCOnline is an addon designed to enhance your online media streaming experience. With seamless integration and intuitive features, our extension provides the app VLC but distributed online from our cloud servers. As such, it provides the following functionality: …
note the:

part
This doesn’t look like it uses the VLC that you have installed locally,
but some cloud version instead.
I’m very hesitant to even try and install it at this point.
Of all the available options, just based upon the description, this would not have been my choice of addon for this purpose.
I will boot up one of my VM’s and test it there.
Well VLC online says “Can’t read or change system data”, I just downloaded clipgrab, appimage is a cool thing.
No - that will NOT make it easier.
It’s not seamless.
It is intended to “grab” (download) the videos - then you have a local copy and can use whatever player you like to play it back.
You start the program,
copy/paste the video URL from the browser into the program,
start the download,
and, when that is finished, you have a local copy
and can watch it with whatever player you like.
To watch YT videos while you are browsing, but not in the browser, but in VLC instead,
this is not what you want.
And:
clipgrab
is not a firefox extension - it’s a separate program.
I use the AppImage - which you get when you click the blue “free download” button …:
Just use another extension - I have linked you to two different ones.
… it’s already an hour or two into Saturday for you - it is still Friday (half six pm) here
I have clipgrab already, I know how to use .appimage files. I do not see where to paste the URL when I open it. Just that and the rest of the window has nothing. The how to use vid. it is white & white is to bright to see the details for me.
Here is the link to a screenshot of what clipgrab
looks to me:
You copy the URL from the browser and paste it into the input field below the blue “Please enter the link to the video you want …”
Wait a few seconds, then the “grab this clip” button to the right becomes active - and click it to initiate the download.
Take a step back -
I thought you wanted to use a Firefox extension which opens any YT video in VLC instead of in the browser itself.
clipgrab
is a totally different approach - I’m now sorry that I even mentioned it.
I have it open in VLC says it can’t read or change sys settings.
You have WHAT open in VLC?
Are we talking about a locally stored video now?
Or are we talking about the Firefox extension?
clipgrab isn’t a firefox extension
I know clipgrab is a full app., I have it working.VLC online can’t read or change sys settings. So I decided to get CG.
If it works for your purposes - good!
Once again:
remove that - and try one of the two extensions that I linked to further up.
Why would you want to struggle with that thing which apparently does not work for you,
when there are alternatives to it - which may even work?
