Vivaldi update to 5.2.2623.33-1.1 (build 12 April 2022) crashes while opening on KDE

I’m not entirely sure under which topic to report this. Anyway, as per subject, I applied the latest update to Vivaldi, on KDE. When the app is opened, the window appears briefly, but then crashes out. Run from the command line I get as reported below.

Seemingly a problem with the Calendar (which I have never used).

For now I have downgraded back to 5.2.2623.26-1.1, which runs perfectly OK…

$ vivaldi-stable

Check whatever plugins you use … start it without them.

Thanks very much for the suggestion, I was able to open with --incognito, disable everything there, then try again … but unfortunately with the exact same result.

Opening in incognito gives me the error messages below. What is baffling me here is that I do not have any extensions enabled now, and I do not have an extension anywhere I can see in my profile with ID mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli

$ vivaldi-stable --incognito

I should add: I actually get the same error messages when I downgrade to the previous version (with extensions disabled). Except it does not do the segmentation fault.

What if you create a fresh new Vivaldi user profile (just for this test) and see if the problem persists?

:warning: (Do not accidentally delete your primary user profile/folder!) :warning:

Thank you for that suggestion. Interesting … it still complains about the extension I don’t have and certainly don’t have enabled, but it doesn’t complain about the Calendar, and it does not segfault.

However if I switch back to Person 1 (so imaginatively named :slight_smile: ), back to all same error messages, and it segfaults.

I suppose I am going to have to face up to the facts and re-install … ach, all those passwords and extensions to restore :frowning:

This shows that it’s a user profile / config issue; not a system nor Vivaldi issue. Somewhere in your “Person 1” profile folder is an errant config file, possibly.

Why reinstall? Are you referring to reinstalling Manjaro? Reinstalling Vivaldi?

Sorry, yes I just mean re-install Vivaldi. I know I could be smarter and just create a new profile, but to be honest I think it’s ultimately less work to just save my bookmarks and start from scratch, and besides, I am not quite sure what part of Vivaldi configs I’ve broken, when or how.

I marked as solved, but as a postscript: running version 5.2.2623.34, which came out just a couple of hours ago, gives the same error messages but does not crash :slight_smile: :slight_smile:

Vivaldi was crashing for me this morning but only on my Default profile. So I knew nothing drastic needed to be done like reinstalling or deleting everything. I figured that it probably had something to do with restoring tabs/session, so what worked for me was going to .config/vivaldi/Default/Sessions and deleting the following files: Session_123456789 and Tabs_123456789. I might not have needed to delete both those files but that’s what I did :wink:.

Thanks ydar, and winnie again, if I could mark both as solutions I would. ydar’s solution is certainly much less dramatic than a re-install. (Although I was lucky and did not actually re-install, given the newer update just worked.)

@drfear, if you don’t give me back my hard-earned Solution trophy, then you will know the true meaning of fear! Mark my words I wi-. Ohhhhhh. Your name is “Dr. Fear”? Nevermind then. I thought you were “DRF Ear”.

Good news, everyone!

Coming soon to a Manjaro mirror near you.

I just deleted only the ~/.cache/vivaldi folder and it fixed.

That was the first thing I tried, but it didn’t fix it for me.

I apologize again! Although in a way now the whole question has become redundant, I rather suspect it might crop up again in a future release. A while back I had a problem with opening Sessions saved in a previous version (using the Save all tabs as session thing) causing the newer version to crash. Seems the code is a bit sensitive on this feature.

I overcame that one by not using the feature at all, preferring Bookmark all tabs (which puts a lot less strain on the system too).

Last but not least, people do assume my username is some kind of gamer tag, but actually Dr Fear is my real name :slight_smile:

You can see the changelog of Vivaldi.
I noticed that Vivaldi v5.2+ crashes in KDE more than Vivaldi v5.1.
