Virtualbox 7.0.8. r156879

I’ve installed Virtualbox for a long time, but i haven’t used it for a long time. Now i want to use it an tried to install a Windows 10 guest, then a Lubuntu 22.04 guest. It’s possible to create both guest, but when i try to start them, the start-process stucks at 20 %, not starting any guest at all.

I’ve installed the following packages:

inux61-virtualbox-host-modules 7.0.8-9
virtualbox 7.0.8-2
virtualbox-ext-oracle 7.0.8-1
virtualbox-guest-iso 7.0.8-1

I’ve watched the logs, and the following error occurs when trying to start the virtual machine:

Jun 04 16:37:00 notebook systemd[757]: Started virtualbox.

I don’t know what the problem is. Can anyone help me?

This may be caused by the extension package - I suggest you remove the package virtualbox-ext-oracle - and retry.

VirtualBox is extremely picky if you are not using the correct extension pack

Hey, I just came across this same exact problem on my setup.

The way I solved it is by adding ibt=off to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT.

I hope this works out for you as well.

Hello CoolFreezer,

thank you, that entry in the grub config file did the job. But what is it exactly that i’ve turned of now?

@linux-aarhus : Thank you for your suggestion, but even without the extension package the error was still there. Until now I helped myself with 2 old physical PCs as “virtual machines”, but virtualbox is far more flexible for testing. The interesting thing is, that the virtualbox package from the official repository still hat the version number 7.0.8-2 and the virtualbox-ext-oracle package from the AUR repository is still on 7.0.8-1

OK, i’ve found this article: NVIDIA
As i feared, i am turning off some security features with this setting:

Note: 470xx and older drivers may not function correctly on Linux 5.18 (or later) on systems with Intel CPUs 11th Gen and newer due an incompatibility with Indirect Branch Tracking. You can disable it by setting the ibt=off kernel parameter from the boot loader. Be aware, this security feature is responsible for mitigating a class of exploit techniques.

The situation mentioned there is exactly my configuration:

  • Kernel newer than 5.18 (i have the LTS-Kernel: 6.1.38-1-MANJARO installed)
  • CPU: 11th Gen Intel Core i5-1135G7

but the most interesting thing is, that i don’t have a NVIDIA graphic card in my notebook! :astonished:

[mynotebook furby]# lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"
0000:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] (rev 01)
        DeviceName: Intel Tigerlake UHD Graphics
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics]

so why are the following packages installed on my system?

[furby@mynotebook ~]$ pacman -Q | grep -i nvidia
mhwd-nvidia 535.54.03-1
mhwd-nvidia-390xx 390.157-7
mhwd-nvidia-470xx 470.199.02-2

I’ll try to purge them, reboot and reactivate the ibt and see, if there still is a problem with virtualbox. When i’m not able to boot again you’ll get the anwer some hours (days?) later
