Video issue : Intel Arc Graphics 130V / 140V

Lucky owner of a LENOVO ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13, I’m having a big problem with the display, while all the rest of the hardware is correctly handled.
In other words, instead of running at 120Hz, glxgears gives me 6/7 fps maximized window.
Where it becomes incomprehensible is that as soon as I connect an external monitor via hdmi, the display frequency correctly switches to 120Hz on the built-in screen and 60Hz on the external monitor. And it works so well that if I move the glxgears window from one screen to the other, the display frequency in glxgears automatically adapts with no side effects.
But also, without plugging in an external screen, sometimes (rare), the frequency ends up back at 120Hz. But never as soon as you log on, only after a few iterations of glxgears.
This randomness leaves me speechless…
I’ve tried every type of logon, every combination of cold start or reboot, and no logic…
The only thing that will restore the frequency to 120Hz is plugging in an external monitor.
On the downside, once the frequency has stabilized at 120Hz, there are lags at more or less regular intervals that can be felt in the movement of the mouse cursor.
You can understand my distress: as it stands, this computer is unusable, unless I carry around an external screen (LoL), which would cancel out the benefits of a machine weighing 989 grams.

I’ve just discovered that as soon as the session is opened, forcing the PC into sleep mode and then waking it up by pressing a key causes the display to switch to 120Hz.
The mystery remains, but in the worst-case scenario, despite the intermittent lags still being there, it’s a solution that works.

So seems to be a dual-boot. Did you actually disable fast-startup on Windows and fastboot (or similiar) at the UEFI Settings? Drivers in Linux and Windows work differently. Windows saves the state of some sort in software level (especially fast-startup, what is “semi-hibernation”), while Linux always needs a full initialization. Without, you can assume problems, especially on dual-boot systems.

Your monitor must be capable to use VRR so that it gets enabled.

When you plug in another monitor, it seems to get disabled. It also seems that suspending can disable it.

I wonder if VRR is enabled on Gnome now by default? :thinking: I have no VRR monitor and not such a new GPU.

PS: No trace in logs of VRR or CMRR

At least there is a crash of the intel driver while starting with GuC Firmware when waking up from s2idle (“modern standby” in windows terms):

The driver must have reset something when restarting. But that would require detailed debug messages. Most likely another bug here too which is related.

In any case, at 6-7 FPS I can only imagine that the driver assumes through CMRR that little has to be rendered and therefore saves power. Try turning off a few power saving functions using the module parameters and see if it works.

Having tinkered all over the place, I reinstalled the clean system.
Same problem.
Then I switched to the experimental kernel available: 6.13.0-rc2-1
Same problem…BUT!
I no longer have display lag or mouse movement lag.
Of course, to get this result, I still have to switch to standby mode as soon as the session is opened.
The log is full of scary errors that I can’t understand.
I’ll see what I can change about the power configuration…

This time, I’m totally lost…
Following megavolt’s advice, I looked for an energy setting, but nothing.
So I took the opportunity to change the mouse pointer, the screen background and set the performance to maximum(!!!). I didn’t understand why, but to validate these changes, the system asked me for my password and advised me to close my session.
Once back in the session, I had the idea of testing the webcam. The system asks me for authorization, which I validate, and then, no device! Except that I know it works correctly with the original kernel and the experimental one (previous installations).
I reboot and the webcam works, but not only that: the display runs at 120Hz!
I reboot again, hot, cold, same thing: the display runs at 120Hz without having to go into standby mode first!

Is this due to having set the performance to maximum?
Is it the fact of having validated an interface that required elevation of rights and/or that this interface has set a default value that didn’t exist before?

Yes, it makes sense. If you switch the CPU governor to “Performance”, this also works for the GPU, as both are on the same chipset and are heavily linked.

Just note that running the display always at 120hz increases battery consumption and that’s also the reason why there are such annoying powersave functions. I don’t think you need 120hz for doing office work. :man_shrugging:

Many thanks to you megavolt, it is indeed the performance setting that influences the refresh speed!!!
Curiously, of the 3 modes (power,balanced,economy), only the “balanced” mode drops the fps.
Another curiosity: in the control panel (top right), the power management button is illuminated only in “performance” and “economy” modes, and switched off in the problematic “balanced” mode.
One last thing: no more display lag or mouse movement.
I’m not going to close this post just yet, as I’m assuming that this is not normal behavior and that there must be some kind of setting to correct this problem.
If anyone can come up with a permanent solution, I’d love to hear about it!
