USB Ports and Bluetooth randomly do not turn on/activate on boot

Hello, I am encountering a frustrating issue where sometime (more often than not) at boot my usb 2.0 ports and bluetooth card don’t activate on boot. Like no power is going into the mouse, and unable to reactivate bluetooth with the toggle in the system settings, as if there is no bluetooth installed in the computer. Sometimes it fixes itself if I restart, but randomly both stop working sometimes when turning on the computer. Ive encountered this issue on both kernel 6.6 and 6.8

Ive noticed the USB ports turn off (by observing the mouse’s light) only when linux itself starts booting up. Whenever I boot into bios instead of linux, the usb ports work fine every time.

So from my best guess this is an issue with the linux kernel with my hardware, is there a grub boot command that can guarantee the usb ports and bluetooth will turn on when manjaro boots up?

Broken boot:

Thank you for responding, Ive added the inxi results. Please let me know what you see.

Hi andreas85,
I don’t mean to pry, but have you had a chance to look at the terminal output? Is there another terminal output you need?

From the inxi output, your USB devices are detected whether working or not. I suggest you might have an issue due to an intermittant or loose cable, or perhaps low quality hub.

That’s my only guess. Cheers.

Speculation:

When entering the bios there is more time for the hardware to get initialized properly.
If fastboot is enabled, disable it to check if this makes a difference.

Hi Hanzel,

Thank you for the suggestion, but Ive already disabled fastboot, and Im still encountering the issue.

To clarify my earlier bios statement, when I boot and go into bios directly, the usb hub is detected and powers on every time (The mouse light is on and detected) However, sometimes when exiting from the bios and booting into linux the usb hub turns off/deactivates (power turns off in the mouse/no power is going to the usb ports)

So far the only solution is to reboot the computer until the usb ports and bluetooth work correctly. Sometimes I turn on the computer and it works the first try. Sometimes I have to reboot once, twice, or even three times before it works. I don’t see a pattern, my only theory is something do to with the linux itself/software issue. Like I need to find a grub command line variable or some other linux related tweak to guarantee it working every boot.

hi soundofthunder,

Thank you for the suggestion I didn’t notices loose cables. Also the bluetooth itself is integrated into the wifi card, and if the Bluetooth is down, so is the usb ports despite being two completely different devices. I believe it is a software issue.

Interestingly I don’t have any problems with the wifi, despite bluetooth also coming from the wifi card.

Have you tried other kernels? 6.1 perhaps?

Check that you have the latest stable BIOS:

I notice there is v2.02 released on 2023/11/21 to ‘Optimize USB port compatibility’, and a later v2.10 released on 2024/3/26.

Note: Avoid using any of the Beta BIOS versions.

Kernel 6.1 is too old for my GPU, can’t use it. Before starting this thread I already tried a bios upgrade already in an attempt to fix this issue. I don’t remember which version of bios I had when I bought it, but I upgraded to 2.08 to try and fix it. Didn’t work.

Per your suggestion, I now tried 2.10, and for some reason my bios screen kept dropping in and out connection with the display, so I rolled back to 2.08 and that stopped.

Regardless, I doubt this is a bios issue, when Im in bios mode (2.08) the front usb hub and bluetooth is detected correctly every time (mouse light is on). Only issues start linux starts booting up. So for example, I turn on the computer and go directly to bios. The usb ports and bluetooth are working, mouse has power. Once I exit bios and start booting linux the mouse can suddenly turn off, and when logging in bluetooth is not on as well. Its always both devices at the same time when I encounter this issue. But this issue happens randomly and only during boot. If it boots correctly into Manjaro, the usb ports and bluetooth stay on for the duration of the session.

Your mainboard may be too new for Linux generally. Other possibilities include that you have a hardware fault (intermittant), or BIOS misconfiguration. It’s not uncommon to find issues with low-end mainboards, however, none of these conditions are something we can generally help with.

This is within the realm of the posible.

I notice that you’re using KDE Plasma 6.0.4. - this is not released to Stable yet, so I have to presume you’re using either the Unstable or Testing branch. If this is true, then you might be better served by indicating that in requests for help. Perhaps there is something useful to be found in recent Unstable Update Announcement threads.

Thank you for the suggestions, it is true I am on the unstable branch but I was also encountering this issue on the stable branch as well. And when I mention software, I believe there is a bug in the kernel or grub or boot sequence somewhere, not so much KDE, as when I monitor this issue the usb power loss happens well before the kde log in screen shows up.

My theory is I need a variable for the GRUB command line to make it ensure the devices stay on/activate during boot.

Well, KDE’s Plasma 6 does seem a major focus at the moment, but that’s not the exclusive focus - it’s possible for issues to be present with any part of the release, whether it be kernels, GRUB 2, or a host of other likely culprits.

However, the reason I suggest it’s likely not software related (in the vague sense) is based loosely on the observation that others are not experiencing a similar issue. Occam’s razor comes into play, where the simplest possibility becomes the most likely; the issue is specific to you.

That said, and because you’re on Unstable, it’s not possible (for me) to absolutely support either stance. Though, again, it does seem more likely to be hardware related, especially considering it works; albeit not all the time. Sorry I have nothing definitive. Cheers.
