USB ethernet adapter hangs system... reliably :-(

In Linux you are pretty free to use whatever you want. tlp is not an essential package but helpful for this type of adjustments. In your case I would install it by

sudo pacman -Syu tlp

and try what I have described.

Thanks. I blacklisted the ethernet adapter and did sudo tlp start manually. Let’s see how this fares.

Am I right in thinking I can systemctl enable tlp as an autostarting service? Details like that aren’t in the man page.

from Arch page:

Enable/start tlp.service

I’m not sure i quite understand what you mean by “hangs” there.
Because if you are able to perform all that you mentioned:

  • The system is obviously still operating as it should

If it is only your mouse not responding then we better change the topic title and concentrate on that problem…

It’s a weird problem. I think for some reason (power management?) the network interface or Networkmanager hangs after a period of inactivity.

The result: whenever I do something that involves network access, the whole system becomes completely unresponsive (not even REISUB works), except I can still move the mouse cursor around.

This, by the way, is very interesting, since I use a Bluetooth mouse…

Definition of “something that involves network access”: run ping in a terminal, open a new website in a browser, click on the Networkmanager icon in the systray, etc. But most importantly, it also means trying to shutdown the system correctly, both through the DE and through another TTY.

Sometimes the system ‘unfreezes’ after something like 90 seconds, but the moment I try to use the network or shutdown, it freezes again. Other times, once frozen, the system will not unfreeze again.

Occasionally, when the system unfreezes, I can click the Networkmanager icon in the systray without the system freezing again. I can then disable the ethernet connection. If I am lucky, the system will reconnect to the WiFi and if that happens, I can succesfully shutdown/reboot my system the correct way. Sometimes I cannot disconnect from the ethernet connection this way and sometimes it will not reconnect to the WiFi. Sometimes the system will freeze again when I try any of this.

So: because the network interface (or Networkmanager?) hangs, the whole system will hang, to the point where I have to use the power button to turn off the laptop.

This only ever happens when the USB ethernet adapter is connected, so the title is correct.

Ok then lets see what your logs tell you when your system “hangs”…

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Execute journalctl -f.
  3. Note the approximate time, when your system hangs, with seconds precession somewhere on paper.
  4. Try to paste the relevant error messages you see when your system “hangs” separated by three backticks on their own lines, before and after the log lines.

This last step is ofcourse difficult to perform when it is “hang”, so you need to access the logs around the time you noted down in step 3, after you have gained normal operations again like a reboot if needed.
Please see man journalctl for optons you can use to access log entries in the past. (even previous boots)

Those log lines will give a definitive answer of what is going on, and will be crucial for people who are able to solve your problem.

You can see that part of the log in my first post. Got it after reboot with journalctl -b -1.

I can try to follow the log, but $period_of_inactivity is often more than an hour and by that time the lockscreen and later screensaver will have kicked in. Note that the freezing is not relatable to either the lockscreen or screensaver, as I can always log back in from the lockscreen and most of the time the network is not frozen when I log back in.

You could replace NetworkManager with another package like ConnMan or netctl. Details are given in Arch wiki:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Network_configuration

I’ve seen many topics with problems with Realtek chipsets, this one might be related to the driver also…

Thanks @Wollie and @TriMoon! I will test and experiment further if needed. I’ve let the laptop sit for most of the afternoon with autosuspend for the ethernet adapter blacklisted and, fingers crossed, so far the laptop has not frozen on me.

I’m also seeing this problem even after trying the suggested fix to /etc/tlp.conf. However, it is happening randomly when I use my laptop as well as when it has suspended (or recently come back from being suspended). The symptoms are:

  • A period of time elapses after reboot. Sometimes a few hours, sometimes up to 18 hours of uptime. Various usage, suspend, wake, activity during this time.
  • Ethernet connectivity suddenly drops.
  • There is a kernel trace in journalctl output (see below).
  • Attempting to do anything related to the network causes a hang e.g. running inxi hangs after CPU output.

The only way to recover is to hard reset. reboot also hangs. I’m using 1G ethernet built into a Philips display and connected to my laptop via USB-C. NetworkManager still shows as running but trying to restart it causes the command to hang.

Tried:

  1. Adding the ethernet adapter to USB_BLACKLIST="0bda:8153 in /etc/tlp.conf
  2. Updating to latest kernel 5.10.2-2-MANJARO when this was originally happening on 5.9.11-3-MANJARO.

Various output including the kernel trace from 3 separate instances:

  • Similar OpenSUSE Bug 1083866 which was closed due to linking to firmware. • Similar but not the same journalctl output in Kernel Bug 198931 with device (r8152) but different adapter. Comment 52 suggests using kernel boot params usbcore.old_scheme_first=1 usbcore.use_both_schemes=0 usbcore.autosuspend=-1 pci_aspm=off. Have not tried this yet - will wait until I get any results from the above.
  • Similar Kernel Bug 200977 which Comment 28 suggests setting usbcore.autosuspend=-1 pci_aspm=off kernel params. Also not tried until I get results from the above

So, looks like this may be a Linux Kernel bug related to transferring large volumes of data over the ethernet adapter. Will report back but any other suggestions welcome.

I will keep an eye on it. But for the moment blacklisting autosuspend seems to work for me. I haven’t had another freeze in a couple of days. I haven’t been terribly busy on my laptop, but it has been sitting at the lockscreen for a fair bit.

I talked in direct messages with @SimonStr who was experiencing the same problem. I wonder how he’s been faring with the autosuspend blacklist.

[edit] btw, looking at those other bug reports, this really does seem a usb-ethernet adapter issue. Before I had this Dell with only USB-C ports, I had a Thinkpad with a proper built-in ethernet port. Never had an issue with that. But obviously, that ethernet port was not going through a USB connection, but was directly wired in.

@muvvenby I also have issues with my USB-C adapter (it’s an Inateck). My it’s RTL1853 (driver is r1852) related. My lsusb:

            ID 2537:1081 Norelsys

I tried blacklisting the driver with tlp in /etc/tlp.conf:

USE_BLACKLIST="0bda:8153"

This did help a bit - like from crashing every 2 hours to once per day… usually after a long period of inactivity. Then I found this bug report: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200977

I’m now using the kernel parameters from this message:

Shahar Evron 2020-12-04 08:40:55 UTC
I can confirm that I've been running for a few days now with no crashes (after previously seeing crashes within 2-4 hours of working), with the following kernel parameters based on @Emtee's suggestion:

usbcore.autosuspend=-1 pci_aspm=off

… no crashes since (5 days, now)…

Note that each time network froze, you could see a stack dump in dmesg… only problem was that usually the kernel was so tainted that you could not do a sudo dmesg… I then learned to keep a sudo su - window open to be able to see the message.

Also note that this is surely autosuspend related - you can make it freeze by waiting ~ 45 minutes. Something will kick in to suspend the USB network and that’s when it freezes.

BTW: I have one more issue with this USB-C adapter… when I boot up the system in the morning the adapter does not get initialized. I see the network light flashing, but Linux just does not see the devices (network, nor HDMI display) in the hub - so no network, no 2nd display.
What’s even more weird is that if I shutdown the system and boot it up again (without unpluging any cable) it starts working again. I did try to shutdown the system again to reproduce but it just does not happen - I need to wait until next day

The laptop in question is not my own. However, I haven’t heard anything from the owner since then that any problems have occurred, so I think everything is fine.

I needed to go into the laptop BIOS and enable a couple of “pre-boot Thunderbolt” settings, which came with warnings that this was unsafe to do, but otherwise the laptop would not recognize the dock’s usb and network devices… at all. It would just use the connected display and nothing else. Maybe you could have another look at your BIOS settings?

I have the Dell WD19TB USB/Thunderbolt dock. I don’t have issues at boot time, but when (re)connecting the dock to a running laptop, it will recognize the display and ethernet port, but not the keyboard. I can unplug/replug the keyboard and this doesn’t help.

So… it mostly works, but remains troublesome.

This made no difference.

Similar Kernel Bug 200977 which Comment 28 suggests setting usbcore.autosuspend=-1 pci_aspm=off kernel params. Also not tried until I get results from the above

This solved the problem. I’ve not seen the hang for the last few days since adding those kernel params and rebooting.

I have reported the scenario and workaround to Realtek linux nic maintainers <nic_swsd@realtek.com> listed in r8152.c « usb « net « drivers - kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git - Linux kernel source tree and also to the linux-usb mailing list: 'RTL8153 1G USB ethernet kernel hang bug' - MARC

I have marked @Wollie’s answer as the solution for this thread. At least for me blacklisting USB suspend for the ethernet adapter solves the hangs on my laptop.
