USB devices not detected properly, only charging?

Hey everyone,

I want to connect my Huawei Mate 10 lite via usb to my laptop, but the smartphone is not detected, yet the phone is charging.
The same problem occurs when I try to connect my Tolino Shine, the device is not detected but it starts to charge.
I exchanged the usb cable, but the problem persists.
I also tried to connect 2 separate wireless mouses. The touchpad moves the cursor, but any of the mouses doesn’t…

A loooong google search did not yield any result.

I noticed several errors in this log.
Firstly, Dez 26 16:47:03 jan-pc gsd-usb-protect[1266]: Failed to fetch USBGuard parameters: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.usbguard1 was not provided by any .service files
although I don’t remember ever installing USBguard.
Secondly: Dez 26 16:47:00 jan-pc kernel: usb 3-1: Failed to query (GET_INFO) UVC control 2 on unit 1: -32 (exp. 1)
Thirdly: Dez 26 16:46:58 jan-pc kernel: usb 1-3: Device not responding to setup address

Device: HP Envy x360 Convertible 13-ag0xxx
Kernel-Version: 5.15.7-1
DE: Gnome

Thank you in advance for your help

You need to switch the phone to file mode.

USBguard - never heard of it - just looked it up in the repo - it exist but is not installed by any of the official editions - in any case it is a set of policies for usb devices to you will have to configure it - maybe enable a service

sudo systemctl enable --now usbguard
$ usbguard
Usage: usbguard [OPTIONS] <command> [COMMAND OPTIONS] ...

 Options:

 Commands:
get-parameter <name> Get the value of a runtime parameter.
set-parameter <name> <value> Set the value of a runtime parameter.
list-devices List all USB devices recognized by the USBGuard daemon.
allow-device <id|rule|p-rule> Authorize a device to interact with the system.
  block-device <id|rule|p-rule> Deauthorize a device.
reject-device <id|rule|p-rule> Deauthorize and remove a device from the system.

list-rules List the rule set (policy) used by the USBGuard daemon.
append-rule <rule> Append a rule to the rule set.
remove-rule <id> Remove a rule from the rule set.

generate-policy Generate a rule set (policy) based on the connected USB devices.
watch Watch for IPC interface events and print them to stdout.
read-descriptor Read a USB descriptor from a file and print it in human-readable form.

add-user <name> Add USBGuard IPC user/group (requires root privilges)
remove-user <name> Remove USBGuard IPC user/group (requires root privileges)

The usb connection type is set to MTP.
ADB (Android debugging bridge) also does not detect any devices.

And usbguard is apparently not installed, because when I execute the command you provided I get this message:

sudo systemctl enable --now usbguard
[sudo] password for janst:
Failed to enable unit: Unit file usbguard.service does not exist.

I use a dual-boot system (Manjaro and Windows 10) and everything works fine in Windows… Just tested it

Update 1 day later:
it started to work again without changing anything… Linux can be infuriating sometimes…
Nontheless, if anyone has any suggestions or tipps on what could go on here, i would appreciate it very much

Just out of curiosity, your boot device is not encrypted, right?

As I also have the same problem. Couldn’t find a solution either, so I put it down to my drive being encrypted as it worked before that time.

I have no answer - and the usbguard service exist only if usbguard is installed - and I assumed it installed as the original topic indicates it was expected.

The message could be informational - as in - let’s see if usbguard is available - use it otherwise log a message. Such info can be confusing even to a seasoned user.
