Switching to material shell using the layout switcher on the stable branch seems to work for me in a VM. Since Material shell is a extension some conflict could be the cause, that would be my first step, disable extensions not directly needed. Posting more then your kernel version could shed some light on your specific setup and encourage others to help you solve the issue.
