Update failed, won't boot, black screen

My Manjaro just broke, I got a notification that there were about 40 new packages earlier (yesterday evening or earlier today). Usually I wait a day or two, but in this case I had an application (GoLand) that suddenly refused to start with 'execv failed : Permission failed". So I foolishly figured I do the 40 updates, and then rebooted the machine. After the updates the machine won’t boot anymore.

I can’t see any messages in the stable update section in the forum that there are supposed to be an update today. Unfortunately I did not check there first. Was this update not intended for stable?

Now when I boot, I get only a black screen and a blinking cursor, I can’t switch to another tty, there is no grub menu, etc. I booted from a USB and tried the following:

[manjaro@manjaro-cinnamon ~]$ sudo mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt
[manjaro@manjaro-cinnamon ~]$ sudo manjaro-chroot /mnt
sh-5.0# sudo pacman -Syyu

Everything is backed up, so I CAN do a full reinstall right now, but I did that just a few weeks ago, so I really do not want to do that again so soon. Can this be fixed? Thanks…

Inxi says that I run Kernel 5.8, but that is because I am running from a USB now. I use kernel 5.4…

No one has any ideas on how to solve this?

Perhaps this?

:man_shrugging:

Nope, ‘sudo pacman-mirrors -g && sudo pacman -Syyu’ did nothing…

I’ll give it one more hour, if there are no more suggestions, I will reinstall my system…I rather spend a day reinstalling my system, than spending hours or days waiting for a solution that might not come…

Maybe you did a partial update, without being completely ready in the repo, it is good habit to make backup copies before updates

Maybe, but this update showed up early in the morning or late last night, so they should be updated. (just checked, and one of the two Swedish servers are updated now. I did the update a few hours ago though).

I got Cinnamon version 4.8, which is weird (todays stable update had cinnamon version 4.6.7 in it). Feels like I got a testing/unstable update or something…

I am pretty sure my system is completely broken though, I probably have to reinstall anyway…

On the live usb mount your disks then chroot to get access to your system.

After that, the first thing you need to do is check /var/log/pacman.log to see what may have broken your system. I suspect an update from xorg, kernel could be the problem

Well here is the part that is from today:

/var/log/pacman.log

I am ready to reinstall my system now, but if you can see what happened, then I might try to save the system. Otherwise, I will reinstall…

I do have a timeshift snapshot from this morning, but my feeling is that that won’t help. I am not even seeing the GRUB menu when booting up, so it feels beyond repair…

Not even when holding shift? If you could get to GRUB, you could append “3” to the list of kernel parameters to see if that makes it boot to a tty.

I have tried holding down shift, and it does not help. Still just a black screen and a blinking prompt. I cannot change TTY… :frowning:

Have you tried downgrading/changing the kernel, recreating the GRUB configuration?

I don’t know how, but if you explain how, I will try it…

And then you can use mhwd-kernel to install/remove a new one. To downgrade the current one, I believe the downgrade program is the simplest to use (or you can install it with pacman -U from the package cache). sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg regenerates the GRUB configuration.

I am using 4.19 and 5.4 (two lts/recommended kernels), is there even a point in downgrading them? And to which version?

Should I go straight to sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg?

I just ran it, here is the result :

sh-5.0# sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Sde must be my USB i am booting from.

Your pacman.log indicates that both kernels have been updated. So naturally to the previous version.

Oh, I though you meant 5.3 or something, but you meant 5.4.x-1

I ran the grub thing, and rebooted and no change…So I’ll try downgrading the kernel now…

Downgrade the 5.4 kernel did not help either. I am going to bed now, and most likely I will reinstall first thing in the morning, unless someone came up with a truly genius idea while I am getting my beauty sleep.

I am pretty sure we can say that this issue was caused by myself and my tinkering with my computer. Long story short, I had just added another old drive, that happened to contain a “boot sector” (not sure of the name?) and this just happened at the about same time as I made the update. Anyway the computer most likely got confused and tried to boot on the wrong drive.

It could probably have been solved fairly easily, but I didn’t realize this until I had already reinstalled Manjaro, and had the exact same boot issue on a clean install.

And me being confused about Cinnamon 4.8 and 4.6.7 was just me not being able to read the package list correctly.
