Update broke grub. No Manjaro showing. Only Snapshots

Todays update broke grub.

It only shows snapshot entries and memtest. No Manajro. I tried running update-grub and os-prober. But neither seem to affect anything. When I run update-grub I get this error message:

/usr/bin/grub-probe: warning: unknown device type nvme0n1

I have checked gparted and I cant work out what the problem is. The OS partition is flagged as boot and esp.

UPDATE:

I have isolated the issue down to the grub update. I have managed to update everything else.
According to the update instruction it says “don’t forget to update-grub”.

I have tried to run update-grub and os-prober but none of these things seem to have any effect on the grub menu not showing the boot OS.

Here is an inxi:

I don’t see a mounted ESP, could it be you installed in BIOS mode with gpt parted disc /dev/nvme0n1? The unmounted /dev/nvme0n1p1 is too small with 8 MiB to carry the ESP files, looks to be an unformatted bios_grub partition. Please, share output of the following three console commands:

$ [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo BIOS
$ sudo fdisk -l
$ sudo parted -l

After doing some digging it seems I don’t have an efi install. I don’t know why. I just installed Manajro using default values. Although I did set the system up with a separate Home partition so maybe I did something as a result of that.

A post was split to a new topic: UEFI only boots to Windows

I dont have Windows installed. I have Manjaro and OS Tumbleweed installed. Tumbleweed will have a default setup and with Manjaro I wanted to do a separate Home partition this time.

So are you saying that if I disable EFI boot then my non working Manjaro grub will suddenly start to work? I mean its working now but only because I rolled back to before the grub update. As soon as I install the Grub update then the Manjaro entry disappears and I only have access to snapshots.

I have tried to follow the guide but I got errors for every step after mounting the drive and chrooting into it.

This is out of context - possibly my fault - I didn’t realize it was not the OP of UEFI only boots to Windows

Summary

Your partitions says otherwise.

Snapshots implies btrfs and your partition layout lists no btrfs - only ext4

EDIT: Ah I just noticed this is a different thread to mine but with a similar issue. I just followed it from the notification. I think thats the reason for the confusion. But yeh my issue is sorted.

Hmm thats news to me. I wiped all my drives and formatted them to ext4.

Again news to me. My nvme0n1p2 is definitely btrfs. But nvme0n1p3 is ext4.

But regardless.

I followed

this section and all is good with the world. System is fully updated and Grub is working. Thank you all for help.

root # pacman -Syu install-grub

Then once run

root # install-grub

The package includes a hook that will reinstall the bootloader when needed from now on at every update of grub.

Indeed you have a BIOS installation and then the unformatted BIOS boot partition is needed, in your case it’s /dev/nvme0n1p1.

This happens when you boot the live ISO in BIOS mode. Usually, when you boot a live ISO from your firmware there are two possible entries. If you select the one without UEFI in the description you boot the stick in BIOS mode as long as your firmware allows it. Calamares will then install you a BIOS system independently from your drive partition scheme. Normally, BIOS boot fits to msdos parted disks with MBR and UEFI to gpt parted disks. If your drive is gpt parted then Calamares installs the mentioned BIOS boot partition.

In principle this installation scheme works but it is a very rare mode which potentially is not best supported by the developers. It’s not out of spec but rather not a recommended configuration. If you have already a lot of customization in your case I would leave it, but you need to be very careful with the command syntax whenever restoring the boot loader. If you could backup your valualble data and reinstall then this might be the better choice on the long term.

My apologies - I should have noticed whom-is-whom

Thank you for feedback.

I do have quite a customised system that’s been set up for all kinds of things. So I’m a bit reluctant to do a re-install just yet if all is working fine. But no doubt I will need to do a re-install at some point so I will keep in mind for then.

Just to help me understand properly. If I boot the install media in BIOS mode then it will install in BIOS mode?

I’m not sure if I had issues running the installer for me to have run it in BIOS mode. I seem to recall something like that.

Anyway thanks for the clarification.

Correct.

Yes! :partying_face:

And, likewise, to install as UEFI the installer must boot using UEFI technology (not Legacy). BIOS/MBR and UEFI/GPT are generally incompatible when multibooting, which is why we always recommend to install each OS with the same technology.

If you use a Ventoy USB for installing OS ISO’s, that USB should boot with the intended technology, also.

In case it’s useful; I authored a guide recently:
