Black screen and startx won't start

Hello,

I have a problem since the last update (sudo pacman -Syu) : I’m stuck at black screen with /dev/clean msg (but /dev/clean is probably another issue…)

I can switch to tty2 and login but I’m unable to launch the command startx

I tried 2 kernels, and it doesn’t help

Not kernel dependent: same problem here with version 6.9

I found a temporary solution : I removed the proprietary driver for my graphics

switch to tty2

mhwd -li
# check the proprietary driver installed and used by your system
# then remove it
mhwd --remove pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

and install the free one instead :

mhwd -a pci free 0300

It temporary solved my issue : startx work and I no longer have a black screen

but I want and I will try to go back to proprietary drivers after work, I will keep you up to date

Is this a none-issue for all others? My system is a complete standard gnome system (intel/nvidia), without any special tweaks, an no arch packages used, just manjaro and a few flatpaks that simply can’t be an issue. I can’t imagine this is not standard problem of the actual update

I have the same problem on Plasma but it gets stuck on Reached graphical interface.

Edit: Changing to free driver got my system up and running as well. Something is definitely not right with this version of the proprietary driver.

Hello people,
I do have the troubles today as has Flo17.
using 6.9.3-2-MANJARO and XFCE I updated today.
As I am a noob, I had no idea if it would be possible to do the same things to get things working like Flo17 did, cause my specs may be different, but I got it a try:
After switching to tty2 as root, I removed the proprietary driver, and a bunch of green lines showed up, and in the end it said “kernel panic” and nothing worked anymore.
After rebooting the machine, I expected to have a black screen again, but now, I am in normal running firefox. So am I running without any graphics driver now?
Youtube-Vids are lagging, and games won`t start, so I am going to be installing some driver again I guess.

Can I help you somehow? I‘ve seen and installed the kernel and nvidia updates that have been provided in the meantime, but it didn‘t do enough for the problem. I can provide data from x log? But please tell if and what needed, because i don’t see a better way than typing via iPad, since… no gui no browser…

I also switched to kernel66 in the meantime. Didn’t help either. …as told: tell if I can help. I’m a veteran software developer on holidays, and since my notebook isn’t working, and I therefore can’t continue to set it up for hobby music recording, I unfortunately have plenty of time for you… :wink:

I followed instructions on the main announcements page in regards to Nvidia+Plasma+Wayland.

I think this applies to desktops with Nvidia cards. My setup is a hybrid laptop (Intel/Nvidia).
As a result, I changed the modeset and fbdev both to zero (instead of 1).
I’m up and running again, but I’m not sure how this will affect future updates for hybrid laptop users.
If anyone knows the effects this might cause later on down the line, please do tell.

[update] I tried to use proprietary drivers again and fix the issue without success, here is some additional information :

@Tommey223 I think it lags because it doesn’t use the dedicated GPU but the integrated one, what is the output of mhwd -li ? I think the free drivers are installed and used

I had issue with Plymouth, installed
video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

but this didn’t help

After removing with
mhwd --remove pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

everything back to normal life, gui started to work again.

Update again. The NVIDIA 550.90.07-3 update resolves the issue as noted in the recent Stable Updates topic.
