Valkey to replace Redis in the [extra] Repository
2025-04-17 - Andrew Crerar
Valkey, a high-performance key/value datastore, will be replacing redis in the [extra] repository. This change is due to Redis modifying its license from BSD-3-Clause to RSALv2 and SSPLv1 on March 20th, 2024.
Arch Linux Package Maintainers intend to support the availability of the redis package for roughly 14 days from the day of this post, to enable a smooth transition to valkey. After the 14 day transition period has ended, the redis package will be moved to the AUR. Also, from this point forward, the redis package will not receive any additional updates and should be considered deprecated until it is removed.
Users are recommended to begin transitioning their use of Redis to Valkey as soon as possible to avoid possible complications after the 14 day transition window closes.
Chrome/Chromium-based browsers and GNOME 48 - Global Shortcuts
If you have extensions who use shortcuts installed on these browsers, you’ll face an issue of many dialogs opening when the browser starts, it’s quite annoying. The bug has been reported and fixed, but the commit is not yet on a stable release.
The workaround for now, is to disable the feature via --disable-features=GlobalShortcutsPortal
AUR (Arch User Repository) packages are neither supported by Arch nor Manjaro. Posts about them in Announcements topics are off-topic and will be flagged, moved or removed without warning.
For help with AUR packages, please create a new topic in AUR and a helpful volunteer may be able to assist you.
Last year, my main manjaro operation was testing throughout the year. This year, I decided to continuously maintain the stable branch on New Year’s Day.
But I changed my policy. I decided to operate it on unstable. Thank you.
I’m vaguely thinking that UNSTABLE might be fine for my HW configuration and DE. It’s easier to follow the benefits of improvements in the latest kernel (mainly FS, btrfs, bcachefs, etc.).
I have multiple backups and snapshots as talismans.
Latest set of updates broke KDE Wayland for me: wallpaper missing and no panel/taskbar, but window switching, applications, and the runner are all functional.
plasmashell --replace and other attempts at restarting plasmashell were unsuccessful in fixing it and I had to roll back the update via Timeshift.
Did not see anything suspect in the journal over a couple of reboots with the issue persisting.
I can confirm that is also the case in Testing branch. Installing haruna-git doesn’t fix the issue. Running haruna from a terminal results in the following error when the mouse is right-clicked:
unknown() : qrc:/qt/qml/org/kde/haruna/qml/Main.qml:228: TypeError: Cannot read property 'popup' of null
It just needs a rebuild against hwinfo 24.0 . I just built it and it works fine. If your need is urgent then you can take that route or just wait for the official rebuild.
