Unresponsive screen with cursor after resuming while the screen is locked

Hello, hope that everyone is doing fine.

Lately, roughly after kernel 5.7, I have been investigating a patter that arises on proprietary drivers for Nvidia cards on Plasma, probably after the Plasma update itself, but don’t quote me on that.
Basically, after the system wakes up back from sleep:

  • if the system was locked, then it ends up resulting in a black screen with an active cursor;
  • if the system was unlocked (i.e. preventing to lock after resuming from sleep), then the system is relatively fine, but it ends up with minor graphical issues like broken transparency or other compositor issues. Upon locking the screen (super+L) a similar error occurs: all the interface is frozen but the mouse. However no black screen is present, almost like as the screen was locked, but the lockscreen did not display.

I am currently running Linux 5.8 with video-nvidia-450xx drivers. Switching to 440xx did not fix the issue, nor switching to Linux 5.7, or 5.6.

Note I can still access other sessions via ctrl+alt+f2, so the system isn’t frozen.
Did anyone end up noticing the same issue? Thanks anyone in advance for helping out.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

Nope, haven’t noticed anything.

However, does this also happen if you create a new user and log in there???

For the future, please read this:

and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on.

An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

You’re running on AMD and I’m an nVidia guy so I know that the AMD modules are built into the kernel, so try out (in that order)

  • linux54 (LTS = Long Time Support Kernel)
  • linux59
  • linux419

I!f you don’t know how to do that:

  • System Settings
  • Type kernel
  • Click Kernel
  • Add all of the above
  • reboot
  • try them one by one.

:innocent:

Hello everyone.

So yes, apparently there’s other posts that have similar issues.
This is one of them
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/gnome-chromium-chrome-windows-become-blank-after-suspend-when-using-nvidia-graphics/24641/5

I have experienced similar graphical bugs whenever I disable the lockscreen. Ultimately, it seems to end up in being a crash of the Compositor. Further research brought to possibly some loss of VRAM.
This is very similar to a post on the Arch forum:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=254218

Ultimately, with the Nouveau drivers, everything works fine… Unfortunately I’m in need of those Nvidia deivers.

Hi all, same situation here…
but I am not on nvidia nor amd.
Anyway, I’ve tried other kernels as well, but when it happens only sometimes I’ve decided to use only kernel54 LTS…
So now it just happened again, so I found CTRL+ALT+F7 to quit lock-screen (without possibility to enter my password) and enter to command line,
then by “startx” I started desktop environment (KDE) again, but surely I’ve started another instance of KDE where nothing what I previously left open was open. But I could see my browsers running in “task manager” and in htop command.
So I have no idea, how to return into this previous instance of KDE nor how to bring opened browsers into my actual instance. So I’ve just rebooted.

Somebody have some idea, pls, how to go back into my 1st instance of DE in such situation ?
Or better, what to do to prevent loosing LOGIN SCREEN after PC go to lock after period of time ?
It seems, that is not only graphic card related issue.
Thx a lot !

I am having the same issue, latest kernel, Intel graphics. In my case CTR+ALT+BCKSPCE only takes me to a completely black screen with only cursor, as opposed to just KDE lock screen. No further input does anything, other than brightness/sound able to be adjusted.

I read some really old threads, and found a small fix to get rid of just the black screen by changing the KDE Lock Screen theme in System Settings > Workspace Behavior > Screen Locking > Appearance > Wallpaper Type.

Update: After some further testing the specific problem appears to be that everything freezes after any kind of keyboard input after coming out of hibernation. The problem seems very similar to a closed bug report from about 5 years ago, that I cant link to because apparently “links are not allowed in posts” even if I use the hyperlink function.

Second Update: I found a thread in a separate forum which may have possible solutions and/or a possible explanation for why this is happening, but I sadly cant link it because FOR SOME REASON “links are not allowed in your post”. The title of the thread is “Manjaro: Can’t log in. Screen freezes after I enter my password”
