Unexpected shutdown after fans full blast

Recently I’ve been getting a problem where the fans spin up to full speed and then the laptop just switches off. Looking in the journal I see crashes related to kernel split-locks. I have no idea what this means but assume it could be related to a kernel update. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Please see Does Manjaro kernels have Split lock detection on or off? as it contains link to information

Thanks for the info. After reading it it would seem that its not the cause of my problem as a split-lock wouldn’t cause a shut down whatever the state of the kernel parameter. (unless its a split-lock in the kernel)

You are showing just a tiny bit of your dmesg or kernel logs, starting on boot up.

So this is after you have been using it some time?

The most potentially useful logs are when it actually happened.

Find one the one you want from the list from:

journalctl --list-boots

List the logs in reverse from this “unexpected shutdown”

This number you take from from the command above. To see 2 boots ago, for example, you would use boot: -2

journalctl -b -2 -r

Or the long parameter version. (And add --no-pager for copy/pasting.)

journalctl -boot=-2 --reverse --no-pager

Turns out it was a hardware problem. I booted into the BIOS and after a few minutes had the same behaviour, i.e. fans at full blast and then shutdown, so nothing to do with the OS.
I surmised that the problem was to do with the fans, they were obviously working but if they were not reporting their speed it would cause a panic shutdown. Found some identical fans on AliExpress and fitted them along with new thermal paste and thermal pads and (fingers crossed) its fixed.

Too hasty,! It came back so it wasn’t the fans after all. Not sure where to go next but a BIOS update is the last straw I can think to clutch.

From what I recall the crash is intentional - so what are you doing when this happens?

Is the log containing same message as last time?

Did you try creating the following configuration?

Are you playing a game which utilise split lock?

Did you read the background on split lock and why the kernel will crash itself?
